    Notes:

“The exact home of the Stalter family in Switzerland is not known. Ernst Muller, in his Geschichte der Bernischen Taufer, mentions a Barbe Stalter, who came with two children to the Palatinate in 1672, together with other refugees, leaving seven children behind.

"The name Stalter/Stalder is probably derived from one of the countless towns named Stalden which can be found in nearly every Swiss canton. The first Stalters in the vicinity of Zweibrücken appeared in 1742 on the Gersbergerhof, where at that time a leaseholder Christian Stalter lived with his son. In addition another leaseholder, Hans Stalter, with two sons and four daughters, and a day-laborer, Hans Stalter, with two daughters, are mentioned.

"It appears that Hans Stalter, married to Elisabeth Weiss, had two sons by the names of Johannes Stalter and Heinrich Stalter, who became the progenitors of two branches of the Stalter family. One branch still exists today (the descendants of Johannes), but the other has largely died out (the descendants of Heinrich), at least in the area around Zweibrücken. To be sure emigration contributed to this, as well as the fact that in one generation the children of several families remained unmarried. Was there perhaps a hereditary illness which caused responsible people to decide not to marry?"
It is believed/known that the descendants of Heinrich either did not have children, and/or those that did, immigrated to America.” , ,,

    ————————————————
“ Henry Stalter, born in 1725 in Zweibrücken, was a farmer there since at least 1750 when his wife gave birth to a child named Christian, and that first wife died before 1776. Since that year, his second wife, Catherine Imhoff gave birth to two son to Homburg Saar, Henry named the youth, and Jacques (quoted above at Haras). The family is back at Tenscherhof in 1777, year of birth of a daughter. Two daughters died in 1794 aged 23 years, and Henry Stalter, father, dies Tenscherhof, February 23, 1800.“

A Brief History of The Kirschbacher Hof and the Ducal Family That Owned It

“The Kirschbacher Hof estate was the birthplace of our ancestor, Heinrich Stalter. This estate is located on the western edge of present-day Germany, near the city of Zweibrücken, close to Luxembourg and Lorraine, France.

“This estate is very old and is documented back to 1295. Duke Johann I purchased it at the end of the 1500s and gave it to his hunting master Christian von Bernstein. It was he, too, who built the Kirschbach mill.

“In 1737, the widowed Countess Palatine Caroline, née Countess of Nassau-Saarbrücken, as ruling sovereign and guardian over her minor son Christian, bought the estate for 12600 guilders and leased it to the Mennonite Heinrich Stalter. Historians consider her an especially prudent and active sovereign.

“The members of the ducal family preferred to stay at this estate during hunting. The grandsons of the Duke’s mother, the Counts Palatine Karl and Max, and the Counts of Forbach, Christian and Willhelm, were frequent hunting guests and, in this way became acquainted with the tenant Heinrich Stalter, which later proved to be advantageous for the Stalter family.

“In 1762, Duke Christian IV took over the estate from his mother and granted it to his sons. Then Duke Karl II August seized the estate again and donated it as perviously mentioned, to his wife Amilie.

“During the French Revolution (started in 1789 and lasting about a quarter of a century), French troops moved across the border into German territory and set fire to the estate. (The French Revolution was about eliminating the ruling class so estates such as this became targets.) Heinrich Stalter and his family were forced to leave the estate and find temporary shelter on another estate, the Bickenaschbacher Hof, where Heinrich’s eldest son, Christian Stalter, was living.”

At the beginning of 1800 the family moved to Bavaria, near Munich, living on property in Gern near the Nymphenburg palace.

Heinrich was a friend of King Maximillian I Joseph of Bavaria. He is known to have at least six children, but probably had four more. Hermann Guth read documents in the archives in Neuburg telling how Heinrich complained to neighbors and acquaintances that a monestary at Thierhaupten (near Hemerten) was sold for too low a price. The story reached King Max, who insisted that the price be increased. He trusted Heinrich's judgement enough to act upon it.

    Notes:

One of the effects of the French revolution was the annexing of the territories to the north east of what was then France. This included Belgium, Savoy, Nice, and all lands up to the Rhine River. This was accomplished by 1793. This change of government had to have been noticed by our Stalter ancestors. When the Kirschbacher Hof estate was ransacked by the invading armies the Heinrich Stalter family took temporary refuge with eldest son, Christian, who was a leasholder on the Bickenaschbacher Hof. For reasons unknown, this estate was not destroyed. Christian Stalter was residing on Bickenaschbacher Hof when he died in 1831.

In 1800 Hienrich Stalter died on the Tenschof estate. His widow apparently returned to the Bickenaschbacher Hof for it was from here that she wrote a letter to the former Duke Max Joseph of Zweibrücken. In this letter, which is still kept in an archives in Munich, she explains her gloomy circumstances, and reminds the Elector of his promise given to her husband at the occasion of his visit at the Elector’s exile at Rohrbach castle near Heidleberg; namely that the Stalter family should obtain another estate as soon as “his Highness should acquire other dominions”.

The Elector, in fact, remembered his promise and ordered that the Stalter family (several sons and a nephew of Heinrich Stalter) could possess considerable estates from the nationalized Upper Bavarian Abbey’s properties. These Abbey (church) properties were available because, as part of the changes brought about by the French Revolution, there was a great reduction in the power of the Catholic Church. Church lands were confiscated and sold, or used by the French government to gain the support of those “German” noblemen who had lost property as a result of the revolution. This helped the French, because these new properity holders now were indebted to the French authorities, and therefore more likely to support the French in the new regime. This also helped our Stalter ancestors, because now there was land available for them to farm which the Elector could use to keep his promise to his friend, Heinrich Stalter.

A number of other Amish families followed the Stalters to Bavaria, where the government readily accepted them to cultivate the abandoned Abbey’s estates. The Bavarian government was quite aware of the special abilites of the Mennonite farmers.,

    Notes:

Went to Bavaria in 1802. Owner of the grounds of the St. Theresa Cloister at Gern near Munich. Went to the USA with 8 children in 1842. One son, Jakob, stayed in Germany (page 248.) However, he probably only traveled with seven children, since Jakob stayed in Europe and Elizabeth immigrated with Christian Birki in 1851.

“At age 26, Heinrich Stalter II accompanied his widowed mother and two younger siblings, Johannes and Maria, to Upper Bavaria. From 1803 until 1806 it is unclear where they lived specifically, but it is thought that they initially went to an area near Donauworth, some 35 miles north of Munich. By 1807, Heinrich II was married to a woman named Jakobine Stalter. It is unclear whether her surname Stalter was only her married name or if Heinrich married a girl with the maiden name of Stalter. Heinrich II became owner of two estates of a former Catholic cloister located at Gern near Munich. (This area is 1.4 miles east of the center of downtown Munich today. The abbey that was subsequently returned to the Catholic church is now the Kloster St. Theresa). The estates became central habitation points for Heinrich's siblings. His brothers, Johannes, Jacob, and Josef all lived at the estates at one time. Heinrich and Jacobina had a son, Jakob, born July 22, 1807. Over the next 35 years, Heinrich and Jacobina raised a family (nine children) and successfully operated their estates. In operating their lands, they employed a number of Amish workers. Among these were Valentine Birkey and Nicholas Augstein (Eigsti) although their involvement in the operations is vague. There were a number of marriages among the families of the Stalters, Birkeys and Augsteins. By 1842, Jacobina had died. Several of Heinrich's children had already left Bavaria for America. Heinrich disposed of his assets in Germany and, with several of his children, emigrated to America. Although the passenger list with Heinrich's emigration data has not been located, Guth reports his emigration occurred in 1842. What is known is that he after he arrived in Illinois, he lived with various family members, including his daughter, Catherina Stalter Yotty in Tazewell County in 1850. There is no historic evidence that he purchased any real property in America, not unexpected given his advanced age at the time he immigrated. He died sometime between 1852 and 1860 in Tazewell County, Illinois and is buried in the Birki Cemetery, just north of Groveland. His daughter, Elizabeth, was the second wife of Christian Birki on whose farm the Birki Cemetery is located. “

While in Bavaria, Heinrich was one of the signatories to a letter sent March 18, 1811, to King Maximilian I. Joseph (ruler from 1806-1825). In it the “Elders of the Menonists” of the dairy farm Oberndorf, appealed to the King for permission to hire their own private instructors to educate their children in their own catechism, since he had allowed them freedom of religion. But “some of the community have received legal orders to send their children to school a good half hour away.”

The answer came to them on Sept. 11, 1811, that “attendance of the local school remained compulsory, but the Mennonite children were not compelled to participate in religious instruction.”

Others signing the letter were: Christian Güngerich, Christian Bürcky, Johannes Bächler.

Elector Max IV Joseph signed a lease in July 1803 for the “Ditzschen Hof” in Gern at Nymphenburg to the ”Mennonite Stalter the older.”

    PURC:
Heinrich buys from the Bavarian Queen Friederike Wilhelmine Caroline von Bayern, widow of the late King of Bavaria, the Holzbauer property: house No. 2 with 155 daily work of 2.720 guilders. In the emigration documents Heinrich has sold his property in 1841 for 10,766 guilders. (A Bavarian daily work has 3407 sqm = 36,672.64 sqft)?

    Immigration:
According to Herbert Holly research, Heinrich Stalter had considered the idea of emigrating, but his wife was against it even though three children were already living in the USA. It was only after the death of his wife that Heinrich made the decision to emigrate with his family. He applied to emigrate on August 28, 1841, which was approved.

Johannes applied for a lease of estates belonging to the Polling cloister in 1803. It is not clear if he received a lease, but later he operated an estate in Gern along with his brother Heinrich. His ultimate fate is unknown.

“Kloster Polling is a former monastery in Polling bei Weilheim, district of Weilheim-Schongau, in Upper Bavaria, Germany. According to legend, the founder was Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria in about 750, but it seems more likely that the founders were members of the powerful Bavarian noble family of the Huosi. Initially this was a Benedictine monastery, but later became a house of Augustinian canons. The abbey was dissolved during the secularisation of 1803 and the buildings were mostly demolished between 1805 and 1807. The important late Gothic abbey church with early Baroque stucco work by the Wessobrunn stuccoist Georg Schmuzer is now the parish church. Part of what few buildings remained came into the possession of the Dominican sisters in 1892. The dispensary and the service block passed into private ownership. Johannes later operated an estate in Gern along with his brother, Heinrich. It is unclear whether he was a co-owner of the estate. His ultimate fate is unknown.

    Married her cousin.

“Marrying of cousins was NOT a an unusual occurrence in the past. In the general population, 'It is estimated that 80% of the marriages in history were between second cousins'. The population base was smaller. People lived in small communities and migrated within those same small communities. Transportation was slow and dangerous; by walking or by horse and people seldom, if ever traveled beyond the boundaries of the area in which they were born without some sort of armed escort. Our Amish ancestors had even more reasons to restrict their marriage-partner choices. They were a minority group within the general population. Amish principles forbid marriage with those of other faiths , the marriage partner always had to come from the community of Amish believers. Often a suitable partner could not be found among the limited number of members of the home congregation, so, in spite of the dangers of long-distance travel contacts had to be established over long distances. When a wedding did occur under these circumstances, it often happened that other potential marriage partners were discovered among the siblings of the bride and groom. Such doubled unions frequently took place and created a strong bond between two families. Pressure to marry within the Amish group came also from outside the group. There were rules from the local authorities forbidding the Amish/Mennonites from adding people from the communities to their congregations. They could not baptize others into their faith, other than those born into Mennonite families. Church leaders were chastised for baptizing and drawing young unmarried maids into their faith. (Davis, Richard Warren) With all of these restrictions it is understandable that our ancestors chose 'cousins' as their marriage partners in many cases.”

The 1870 census of Groveland shows: Elizabeth Burky, 54, Bavaria; Jacobine, 24, Bavaria; farmer Henry, 23, Bavaria; Jacob, 21, Bavaria; Helena, 20, Bavaria; and John, 18, Illinois; and carpenter John Gerber, 28, born in Canada.

“Despite many efforts to find additional information on Jacobina, Henry, Jacob, and John Birky, no additional information has been found after the 1870 U.S. Census. (Some researchers have incorrectly stated that John Birky, son of Christian and Elizabeth, married a woman named Edith Kelso. However, in the 1880 census, Edith Kelso Birkey and John are living with his mother, whose name is Magdalena Birky. Thus, Elizabeth Stalter Birkey's son, John, did not marry Edith Kelso. The husband of Elizabeth Kelso was John Burkey Jr., son of John Burkey and Magdalena Roggy ). “

“She was the second wife of Jacob Sann. His first wife was a Birkey. It is unknown who this woman was. (On Jacob's oldest son's death certificate, his mother's maiden name was listed as “Birkey”. Mary Sann's marriage license lists her parents Jacob Sann and Jacobina Stalter). Jacob Sann and his son, Jacob J. emigrated in 1843. It is unclear whether Jacob Sr. married Jacobina Stalter before, or after, immigrating. No immigration record has been found for Jacob. It is likely that the family emigrated at, or near, the same time as Heinrich Stalter. In the 1850 Census, Jacob and Jacobina “Sing“, (31) are found in Tazewell County Illinois.

Also present in the household are three “Sing” children - Jacob (8), Christian (6) and Mary (1), and three people named “Stalder” - Frederika (20), Henry (23) and Lina (3 months). These Stalders are certainly Jacobina's brother, Henry Stalter, her sister, Veronika Stalter, and Veronica's daughter, Magdalina. The ages are correct for these people (Jacobina, Henry, and Frederika/Veronica) to be the children of Heinrich Stalter. And Veronica had a daughter named Magdalena (b. 1850) who was born before Veronica married George Eichelberger.

In 1860, the family is listed as “Jacob Soun” near Tremont. The family includes Jacob (49), Jacobina (43), Jacob (18), Christian (16), Mary (10), and James (John - 3). Jacobina and son, Christian, died sometime after 1860. No record of their deaths or burial has been found to date. In 1870, Jacob (58, Bayern) was living with Jacob Jr.(27, Bayern), Mary (20, IL), and John (12, IL) in McLean County, Chenoa Township. Jacob Sann Sr. died sometime between 1880 and 1900. The child of Jacob Sann and unknown Birkey was Jacob J. Sann (January 1842 - 9/14/1922) m. Anna Meyer Exhauster (6/8/1851-6/9/1929), widow of Jacob Neuhauser. Jacob served in Company D., 152nd Regiment, Illinois Infantry, in 1865. He was described as 5'6" tall, brown hair, grey eyes, and dark complexion. His induction records give his place of birth as Germany and his residence as Hopedale. Jacob raised Anna's two children from her first marriage, Mary and Emanuel Neuhauser.”

In 1860, 43 year old George Kidner (Jr.) and 37 year old Ann Kidner, both from from Bavaria, are living in Pekin Township with 4 year old John Bohn (1860 U. S. Census, Illinois, Tazewell County, Pekin Township, p. 22, line 30). 1870 US Census - George Kettner (54 born Bavaria), Anna Kettner (46 born Bavaria) and John Bohn (14, born IL) living in Pekin's 3rd ward in 1870 (1870 US Census, Illinois, Pekin, page 10 [129/151 at Ancestry.com]). I also note that a John Bohn married Ann E. Hons or Haas on 6/25/1858 in Tazewell County . I wonder if perhaps Anna Kettner was the widow or ex-wife of John Bohn Sr. and mother of John Bohn who lived with the George Kettners in 1860 and 1870. I also note that a 28 year old John Bohn from Peoria enlisted in the Union Army for 3 months on 4/20/1861. He was a private in Company E., 8th Illinois infantry. He mustered out on 7/25/1861. George Kettner signed a Declaration of Intent for Naturalization at Pekin Sept. 20, 1855. He stated that he was 39, was born in the Kingdom of Byrne [Bayern/Bavaria], and that he had arrived at New York June 2, 1851.
In 1860 he was living with Anna Elizabeth Haas at Pekin; the census describes the household of laborer George Kidner, 43, Bavaria; Anna, 37, Bavaria; John Bohn,4, Illinois; Frederic Smelzer, 24, Bavaria; and Cartroon, 23, Prussia. Anna had apparently brought a 2-year-old son John to her marriage with John Bohn Sr. in Tazewell County June 25, 1858, and John Sr. had died before 1860.
