Heiser. -- Jacob Heiser, son of Jacob and Kathrine Heiser, was born in Tazewell Co., Ill., on April 22, 1856; died at his home in Fisher, Ill., on Feb. 19, 1923; aged 66 y. 10 m. 28 d. He was married to Elizabeth Bachman on Feb. 20, 1883. To this union were born 12 children, of whom the following survive: Manuel, Alvin, Samuel, Katie, Jake, Mrs. Alvin L. Burkey, Roy, Jesse, and Esther. Barbara preceded him in death about 6 years ago, and two died in infancy. He leaves to mourn his departure his beloved wife, 9 children, 12 grandchildren, 5 brothers, and 2 sisters. He was a member of the Amish Mennonite Church since his youth, and was one of the first Mennonite settlers in the East Bend congregation and worked faithfully unto the end. He expressed his readiness to go home and called the family to his bedside. He bade farewell leaving words of warning and comfort which will long be remembered. It was indeed hard to say goodby to one we all loved so well, one who meant all a father could mean to us. But we feel assured that our loss is his eternal gain. Therefore we humbly say, "Lord, thy will be done." Funeral services were conducted on Feb. 21 by Samuel Zehr from Psalm 39 and Samuel Gerber of Pekin, Ill., from Col. 2:8-10.

Heiser.- Alvin, son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Bachman) Heiser, was born at Deer Creek, Ill., Jan. 9, 1886; died of heart failure at the Burham Hospital, Champaign, Ill., Feb. 9, 1971; aged 85 y. 1 m. On Jan. 5, 1910, he was married to Elizabeth Birky, who survives. Also surviving are 3 daughters (Alice-Mrs. Hubert King, Inez-Mrs. Maurice Schaer, and Clara-Mrs. Clarence Eichelberger), 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 4 brothers (Sam, Jacob, Jesse, and Roy), and 2 sisters (Esther--Mrs. Harvey Ingold and Lizzie-Mrs. Alvin Birkey). He was a member of the East Bend Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held Feb. 11, in charge of Irvin Nussbaum and Don Heiser, interment in East Bend Memorial Gardens.

Living on the banks of the Sangamon River near the Alvin Heiser home/farm were a family of native Americans with the name Hilsbury. They were quiet and lived to themselves in the timber--this would be in the early 1900s. At least one of the men worked for Alvin on occasion and often Alvin and Lizzie would give them food or clothing as needed. One day they just disappeared and no one ever heard from them again.

Esther P. Ingold, of Fisher, Illinois died Friday (April 21, 1989) at Gibson Community Hospital Annex, Gibson City, Illinois.

Her funeral will be Monday (April 24, 1989) at the Gibson City Bible Church. Burial will be at East Bend Memorial Gardens, Fisher, Illinois.

Mrs. Ingold was born on February 3, 1905 at Fisher, Illinois, a daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Bachman) Heiser.

She married Harvie H. Ingold on July 9, 1924 in Fisher, Illinois. He survives.

Other survivors include three son, Wayne Ingold of Morton, Illinois; Dale Ingold and Clyde Ingold both of Fisher, Illinois; one daughter, Vivian Ingold of Fisher, Illinois; a brother, Jesse Heiser of Fisher, Illinois; a sister, Lizzie Birky of Waldron, Michigan; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Ingold was a member of the Gibson City Bible Church and active in the WMSC in Fisher, Illinois. She and her husband co-owned Heiser and Ingold Grocery in Fisher, Illinois for 57 years before retiring in 1983.

DEWEY — Velma M. Birkey, 96, Dewey, died at 7:50 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 7, 2011) at the Gibson Area Hospital Annex.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. today at the Dewey Evangelical Mennonite Church in Dewey. The Rev. Neal Hauser will officiate. Everyone is invited to her graveside service at 10:30 a.m. today at the East Bend Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Birkey was born Sept. 28, 1915, in Dewey, a daughter of Manuel E. and Barbara Good Heiser. She married Clarence R. Birkey of Manson, Iowa, on May 24, 1944, in Fisher. He died Sept. 11, 1981.
Surviving are her children, Maynard (Jennifer) Birkey, Dewey; Charlene (Russ) Taylor, Mahomet; Dennis (Debbie) Birkey, Dewey; and Mark (Brenda) Birkey, Foosland; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and her sister, Verena Birkey, Foosland. She was preceded in death by her brother, Raymond Heiser, and two brothers in infancy.
Mrs. Birkey was a charter member of the Dewey Evangelical Mennonite Church. The garden was her workshop and time spent with family her greatest joy.

FOOSLAND — Verena F. Birkey, 98, of Foosland died at 12:15 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 10, 2018) at Gibson Area Hospital Annex, Gibson City.

Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at East Bend Mennonite Church, Fisher, with the Rev. Michael Dean officiating. Burial will be in East Bend Memorial Gardens, Fisher. Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. and from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, both at the church.

Mrs. Birkey was born Jan. 24, 1920, a daughter of Manuel and Barbara Good Heiser. She married Leslie V. Birkey on Jan. 18, 1951, in Fisher. He died Jan. 15, 2011.
Surviving is a son, Duane (Muriel) Birkey of Foosland; two granddaughters, Alicia (Richard) Rensberger of Elkhart, Ind., and Elaine (Daniel) Mabry of Foosland; and three great-grandsons, Hunter and River Mabry and Chase Rensberger.

She was preceded in death by a sister, a brother and two infant brothers.
Mrs. Birkey cleaned houses for many people over the years. She enjoyed gardening, canning and quilting. She was a member of East Bend Mennonite Church, Fisher.

His stay on earth was brief, yet long enough to endear him to the hearts of his parents and while his bright days on earth were few, he has gone to where there is joy unspeakable and full of glory. FISHER – Inez Heiser Schaer, 95, of Fisher went to be with the Lord in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 21, 2009, at the Gibson City Annex.

She was born Sept. 6, 1913, in Fisher, a daughter of Alvin and Elizabeth (Birkey) Heiser. She married Maurice Schaer on Oct. 14, 1933, in Fisher. He preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 1986.

She is survived by two daughters, Joan (Robert) Cender of Fisher and Virginia (Wesley) Oyer of Fisher; four grandchildren, Angela (Ken) Beachey of Foosland, Philip (Kristin) Oyer of Ludlow, Jayne (Duane) Eby of Fisher, Timothy Oyer of Thomasboro; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and a grandson, Maurie Ray Cender.

Inez owned and operated a tailoring shop in Champaign for many years. She and her husband spent a lot of time in volunteer service through Mennonite Board of Missions, working in multiple states. They were involved with young people, mentoring and acting as house parents. She was a lifelong member of East Bend Mennonite Church where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was active in the church sewing circle. They were the first youth sponsors of the church. She loved the Lord and served Him all her life.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25, at East Bend Cemetery in rural Fisher.

A celebration of life service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 30, at the East Bend Mennonite Church, rural Fisher. Rev. Michael Dean will officiate.

Heiser, -- Lloyd A., son of Samuel and Tillie (Ingold) Heiser, was born near Fisher, Ill. Jan. 22, 1919; died July 3, 1951; aged 32 y. 5 m. 11 d. Death was caused by a bolt of lightning which struck him while he was plowing corn in a field near his home. At the age of twelve he accepted Christ as his personal Saviour and united with the East Bend Mennonite Church, Sept. 28, 1940, he was united in marriage to Eileen Bruehl, of Peoria, Ill. He leaves his wife, one daughter (Janet Mae), his parents, 3 sisters (Mrs. Ervin Springer, Fisher, Ill.; Lorene, at home; and Mrs. John Bruehl, Gibson City, Ill.), and one brother (Melvin, also at home). BLOOMINGTON — Dorothy Ilene Heiser Bruehl, 94, of Dayton, Tenn., formerly of Bloomington, passed away at 6:12 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 30, 2020) at her residence in Dayton surrounded by family.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Church, Normal, with Pastor Kevin Heiser officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home, Bloomington, is assisting the family with arrangements.

A private family interment will be at East Bend Memorial Gardens, Fisher. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Church, Normal; Bryan College; or to CRU (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ).

Dorothy was born Sept. 3, 1925, in Fisher, a daughter to Sam J. and Tillie Ingold Heiser. She married John R. Bruehl on May 1, 1946, in Fisher. He preceded her in death on April 9, 1999.
Surviving are her sons and their wives, J. Roger and Maggie Bruehl, New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; Jeffrey R. and Darlene Bruehl, Dayton, Tenn.; and Alan D. and Susan Bruehl, Bloomington; and 12 grandchildren, Rebecca Cosper, Orlando, Fla.; Jessica Wilson, Cape Coral, Fla.; James Bruehl, Orlando, Fla.; Amanda Bruehl, New Brunswick, N.J.; Julia Taylor, Greenville, S.C.; Angela O'Keefe, Spring City, Tenn.; Laura Bruehl, Dayton, Tenn.; Samuel Kirk, Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.; Jaree Kneller, Lebanon, Tenn.; Casey Bruehl, Glen Carbon; Emily Fischer, Indianapolis, Ind.; and Alex Bruehl, Bloomington; 19 great-grandchildren; and brother, Melvin Heiser, Fisher.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Evelyn Springer and Lorene Builta; and brother, Lloyd Heiser.
Dorothy was a longtime member of the Christian Woman's Club, as well as Grace Church in Normal. After residing at Westminster Village in Bloomington from 2011-2014, where she enjoyed many friendships, old and new, she lived her remaining years with her son, Jeff, and his wife Darlene in Dayton, Tenn.

Edith Elizabeth Birky King, 87, passed into the arms of her loving creator in the early hours of Friday, April 28. 

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, John C King; five children, Arlan (Brenda) King of Phoenix, Arizona, Julie (Paul) Keim of Goshen (currently living in Germany), Emily (Adrian) Jantzi of Prescott Valley, Arizona, Susan King of Ephrata, Pennsylvania, and John W. "Tony" (Marsha) King of Goshen; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two siblings, Marjorie Liechty and Eldon (Jan) Birky. 
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Delilah Stamm. 
Edith was born Jan. 29, 1930, to Alvin and Lizzie (Heiser) Birky in Fisher, Illinois. She grew up on a small farm in rural Illinois and spoke often of her younger years in the country. It was during those years that she taught herself how to play the piano and enjoyed a lifetime of playing hymns and singing around the piano. 
She entertained many Greencroft residents with her music. She also learned to paint with oils and acrylics and painted many garden rocks showcasing beautiful nature and spiritual messages. 
Edith graduated from high school in 1948 and attended one year at Hesston College, where she met her future husband over pingpong. (She won!) 
She married John C. King Aug. 15, 1952. They served together in the ministry for 50 years in various churches in Ohio, Indiana and Nebraska. 
In later years she returned to school to study early childhood development. While living in Nappanee, she started and directed the preschool at North Main Street Mennonite Church. 
After retiring, they moved to Goshen and eventually to Greencroft. 
Friends may call Thursday, May 4, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Waterford Mennonite Church. A memorial service will take place Friday, May 5, at 10 a.m. also at the church. 
Burial will follow the service at Violett Cemetery, Goshen. A fellowship meal will be served. 
Memorial contributions may be directed to the International Student Fund at Goshen College.

FISHER — Gerald “Jerry” Heiser, 87, of Fisher, went to be with the Lord on Monday morning (June 27, 2016) at Presence Covenant Medical Center, Urbana.
He was born Sept. 16, 1928, in Fisher, a son of Jesse and Laura Good Heiser. He married Patricia Birkey on Sept. 8, 1959, in Gary, Ind. She survives.
Also surviving are three children, Lucinda (Todd) Wyse, Elkhart, Ind.; David (Mary) Heiser, Fisher; and Roger (Laura) Heiser, Fisher; a sister, Mary Ann Jost, North Newton, Kan.; six grandchildren, Allison (Chris) Snyder, Kyle Wyse, Eric (Rachel) Heiser, Holden (Ginny) Heiser, Cameron (Madison) Heiser and Nikolas Heiser; and two great-grandsons, Maverick and Henry.
He was preceded in death in death by his parents and a brother.
Jerry attended the University of Illinois and later Purdue University, graduating with an engineering degree. He was employed at Methodist Hospital in the engineering department for 33 years. He was the head of plant operations and oversaw the construction of the new hospital in Merrillville, Ind. Jerry later worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in Hobart, Ind., for eight years. Jerry’s hobbies were farming and restoring antiques. He loved gospel music, but most of all Jerry loved his family.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at East Bend Mennonite Church, rural Fisher. The Rev. Michael Dean will officiate. Burial will follow at the East Bend Memorial Gardens. There will be a one-hour visitation prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to the East Bend Mennonite Church. Lux Memorial Chapel, Rantoul, is handling the arrangements.

FISHER – Dale D. Ingold, age 79, of Fisher went home to be with the Lord at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday April 20, 2010 at home surrounded by his family.

His funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday April 24, at the Gibson City Bible Church in Gibson City with Pastor Paul Thomason officiating. Burial will be at the Willowbrook Cemetery in Fisher. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 23, at the church.

Mr. Ingold was born July 31, 1930, in Fisher, a son of Harve and Esther (Heiser) Ingold. He Married Roberta A. Patterson on June 15, 1954. She survives in Fisher.

Also surviving is a son, Steve (Belinda) Ingold, and daughters Diana (David) Wilkinson and Pam (Jim) Vestal, all of Fisher; another daughter Julie (Kandy) Ingold of Ft. Myers, Fla.; a sister, Vivian Ingold of Fisher; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Wayne and Clyde Ingold.

Dale was a retired longtime owner of Ingold's Grocery store in Fisher. He loved his family, gardening, drawing, painting, and model railroading. He also loved his hometown of Fisher.

After retirement he truly enjoyed visiting with friends, neighbors, and former customers. He always had a smile and a kind word for everyone he met. He was a man of faith and never hesitated to share his testimony. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

ODELL — Lowell R. Heiser, 69, rural Odell, died at 6:02 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 8, 2010) at OSF Saint James-John W. Albrecht Medical Center, Pontiac, and now is in the arms of his loving God.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Dwight United Methodist Church, Dwight, with the Rev. Bill Leppin officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Pontiac. Lowell had been a lifelong farmer in the Odell area. He was a graduate of Fisher High School in Fisher.

Lowell enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved to travel and go for rides on his Harley.

Joan was an active member of the East Bend Mennonite Church, Fisher, all her life. She was also active in the community, working as secretary in the local Dr’s office for many years. In 1987 she became an Administrative Assistant to the Dean of the College of Communication at the U of I. Joan enjoyed working with the students and was an avid fan of the fighting Illini basketball team. Joan excelled at baking, playing organ/piano, singing and enjoyed sharing Christ’s love with others through the gospel group she was a part of called The Reflections. She was an avid Cubs fan, loved fishing and vacations with her friends and always enjoyed spending time with her family, spoiling them with her baking. FISHER - John B. Heiser, 62, of Fisher peacefully passed away at 11:50 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 17, 2023) at home, surrounded by his family.
A graveside celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at East Bend Memorial Gardens, rural Fisher.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Fund, Jesus is The Way Prison Ministry or Seek and Find Ministries.
John was born May 22, 1961, in Champaign, a son of Merle and Edith Wiens Heiser. He married Lisa M. Rogers on Nov. 23, 1990.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa Heiser of Fisher; their son, Jake Heiser of Fisher; his mother, Edith Heiser of Gibson City; and sister, Cleona (Dean) Swartzentruber of Johnson City, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by his father and two sisters, Karen Heiser and Carol Nunn.
John is a 1979 graduate of Fisher High School. After graduation, he began his lifelong career as a farmer. He served on the board of directors of the Fisher Farmers Grain & Coal and the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed a good tractor-pulling event, spending time with his dog, Cocoa, and was a collector of model trains and toy tractors.

MAHOMET – Jeryl "Jerry" Heiser, 59, died at 1:59 p.m. Monday (May 9, 2016) at his home in Mahomet.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at Windsor Road Christian Church, 2501 Windsor Road, Champaign. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 13, at the church with Pastor Randy Boltinghouse officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Mahomet.

Jerry was born May 31, 1956, in Aibonito, Puerto Rico, a son of Donald and Betty (Zehr) Heiser. He married Tammie Evans on Dec. 5, 1992, in Urbana. She survives and resides in Mahomet.
Other survivors include his mother, Betty Heiser of Goshen, Ind.; two children, Alyssa and Joshua Heiser of Mahomet; one brother, Dennis (Linda) Heiser of Goshen; two sisters, Anita (Murray) Hartzler of Florence, S.C., and Debra (Mark) Heiser of Goshen; 10 nephews, Ryan (Amanda) Heiser of Kalamazoo, Mich., Andrew Heiser of Los Angeles, Justin Hartzler of Florence, S.C., Ian Hartzler of Columbus, S.C., Adam and Alex Yoder of Goshen, John McDonald of Lincoln, Ill., and Caleb, Ethan and Levi Ham of Peoria; and five nieces, Amy (Andy) Pugh of San Marcos, Calif., Elyse Yoder of Goshen, Alivia and Hanna Ham of Peoria and Liza McDonald of Fairbury.

Jerry attended Windsor Road Christian Church. He earned a bachelor's degree in liberal arts from Goshen College in 1981. He later graduated from the University of Illinois with an architecture degree in 1990 and worked as a registered architect until the last four years.

He enjoyed carpentry work, building furniture, home repair and working outside in the yard.
