This family picked up the surname Gerard in occasional use. We suspect it began with the birth of daughter Christine, the first child born in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle. The clerk at Baccarat called both father André and his witness Joseph ‘Gérard.’ While André signed with an ‘x’, indicating he was illiterate, Joseph very clearly signed ‘Joseph Schrag.’

This mixup of Gerard for Schrag would continue until April 11, 1863, when Christophe Schrag (a son of André’s brother Christian/Christophe) made a grievance at a public meeting of the civil tribunal in District 2 of the department of Meuse. He explained that the persistent error could only be explained by poor pronunciation of the word Gerard. This resulted in a lengthy remark inserted in the civil records of Chassey, detailing all the family events that had been misidentified because of it.

He was united in holy matrimony to Cathrine Birky at Hopedale, Ill., and lived in matrimony 53 years. To this union were born 13 children, 6 sons, and 7 daughters. He leaves to mourn his departure his loving companion, 6 sons, 7 daughters, 60 grandchildren (7 have preceded him in death), 21 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, and a host of friends. Schrock - Joseph, son of Christian and Elizabeth Schrock, was born in Alsace-Lorraine, May 17, 1852; peacefully fell asleep at his home near Albany, Oreg.; May 6, 1943, following a very brief illness; aged 90 y. 11 m. 19 d. At the age of 3 years he emigrated to this country with his parents, and grew to manhood near Roanoke, Ill. In 1887 he was married to Lizzie Bachman and later moved to Manitou, Colo., where they lived for several years, moving from there to Thurman, Colo., where his companion preceded him in death. This union was blessed with one daughter, Lena, who died in infancy. On Dec. 3, 1893, at Thurman, Colo., he was united in marriage to Bella Yordy, who survives him. He is also survived by one brother, John at Rantoul, Ill., and the following children: David, Tangent; Emma, wife of William Reeser, Albany; Elmer, Lebabnon; Anna, wife of Edward Roth, Albany; Fannie, La Junta, Colo.; Melvin, Albany; Lt. Raymond, Camp Roberts, Cal.; and Leroy, Albany. There also remain 33 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Two sons preceded him in death, Joseph in 1920 and William in 1941, as also did 9 grandchildren, 2 sisters (Mrs. Kate Birky and Mrs. Lena Haverstine), and one brother Christian C.

He united with the Amish Mennonite Church in his youth, and remained a faithful witness "unto the end." In 1898 he was ordained deacon for the congregation at Thurman, Colo. He served in this capacity until 1897 when he was ordained to the ministry at the same place. In March 1906 he moved with his family to Shickley, Neb., and in Oct. 1909 to Albany, Oreg., where the family has since resided. Father took an active part in the church and assisted in the work of her ministry almost until the end. He was exceptionally well for one his age, and his place in the Lord's house was seldom vacant. It was his privilege to partake of the sacred emblems of the communion Easter Sunday, less than 2 weeks before he went to be with the Lord. At the time of his death he was a member of the Conservative Amish Mennonite Church, of Harrisburg, Oreg. Funeral services were held at the Albany Fairview Church on Monday afternoon, conducted by Bishop John Yoder of the Harrisburg congregation, assisted by fellow ministers of both churches. The body of a former Bruning woman, Mrs. William Havenstein was laid to rest in the public cemetery last Wednesday afternoon following funeral services at the Minnonite (sic) Church at Shickley. Services were also held on Tuesday at the Hulse and Riepen home for funerals at Omaha.
Mrs. Havenstein died on February 17, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Herman Bruning of Omaha. She had reached the age of 78 years and 4 months.
The deceased was born on October 17 1856, (the stone says 1857) at Metoria(sic), Ill. Her maiden name was Lena Schrock.
On January 25, 1891, she married William Havenstein. To this union were born five children, one son dying in infancy. Surviving are her husband and four children: John of Edgar, Nebr., Catherine Walter of Shickley, Elizabeth Reynolds of Alliance, Ohio, and Lena Bruning of Omaha. A sister and two brothers also survive.

She was born at Berlin, Germany Dec. 10, 1860, and died at Fisher June 13, 1922. She sailed from Liverpool via Queenstown on the ship City of Berlin, arriving at New York Oct. 23, 1880. The passenger list shows passenger # 537 as spinster Emilie Hafenestein, 19, Germany. The 1920 census of East Bend, Champaign County has John C. Schrock, 61, born in Illinois to parents from France; Amelia, 58, born in Germany, immigrated in 1883; Emma, 30, Illinois; Martha, 28, Illinois; and Sam, 24, Illinois. They are buried in East Bend Memorial Gardens at Fisher, Champaign County.

He suffered a paralytic stroke three years ago from which he never recovered. He was married to Katherine Roszhart on Aug. 15, 1882, who died Aug. 5, 1922. He had made his home with his son Samuel the last four years. He was a member of the Shelbyville Mennonite Church. When a young man he accepted Christ as his Saviour, and remained true to the end. Peter Wagner, 78, retired farmer died at 2 o'clock Monday morning at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Garber, east of Eureka. His death was due to a paralytic stroke, which he suffered sometime during the evening. When the family returned from attending church he was found slumped over in a chair. He had been in his usual health until stricken. Mr. Wagner, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wagner, was born on a farm four miles east of Eureka March 28, 1861, and all his life had been spent in the vicinity of Eureka. He was united in marriage May 27, 1881, with Miss Lena Schrock. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1916, and three sons and two daughters also preceded him. Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Matilda Garber, and three brothers, Christian and Joseph Wagner of Eureka, and David Wagner of Metamora. Funeral services were held Wednesday, at 1:30 p.m. at the residence and at 2 o'clock at the Roanoke township Mennonite church, with the Rev. Ezra Yordy in charge. Interment was in the church cemetery.

David, son of Joseph and Magdalena Wagner, was born near Roanoke, Ill., Feb. 10, 1866; passed away at his home in Eureka, Ill., after a short illness, Aug. 7, 1946; aged 80 y. 5 m. 27 d. On Jan. 24, 1888, he was married to Emma Steider, who preceded him in death Dec. 24, 1911. On Sept. 15, 1914, he was married to Emma Dellenbach, who predeceased him on Aug. 9, 1920. On Oct. 2, he was married to Kathryn Plank, who survives. Also surviving are seven children (Clara, Battle Creek, Mich.; Anna, of Eureka; Henry, of Roanoke; Mrs. Laura Donze and Mrs. Rose Donze, both of El Paso, Ill.; Elmer, Twin Falls, Idaho; and Mrs. Beulah Bachman, of Eureka), two brothers (Joseph--a twin and Chris), 19 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. One brother (Peter) preceded him in death. In his youth he accepted Christ as his personal Saviour and united with the Mennonite Church, remaining faithful unto death. He was of a cheerful disposition and will be greatly missed in the home, church, and community. Funeral services were in charge of Ezra B. Yordy, assisted by John L. Harnish. Burial was made in the church cemetery.

Wagner, Christian, youngest son of Joseph and Magdaline (Schertz) Wagner, as born near Eureka, Ill., Mary 13, 1870; passed away July 2, 1958; aged 88 y. 3 m. 19 d. He had been in failing health for the past year. He accepted Christ at an early age, united with the Roanoke Church and was very faithful in church activities. On Dec. 27, 1894, he was married to Barbara Sauder. Surviving are seven children (Frieda, Chicago; Alvina Zook, Rose Schertz, Pearl Yoder, Celesta Stalter, all of Eureka; Ezra C., Chenoa; and E. Sanford, San Mateo, Calif.), 10 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. His wife, one son (Noah), and three brothers preceded him in death. He was the last remaining member of the Joseph Wagner family. Funeral services were held at the Roanoke Church, July 4, in charge of Wesley E. Jantz, with burial in the church cemetery.

She leaves to mourn her departure husband, 3 daughters, 1 son, 10 grandchildren, 2 sisters, 6 brothers, and many other relatives and friends. Bishop Andrew A.Schrock, son of Andrew and Kathryn (Kramer) Schrock, was born in Alsace Lorraine, France on October 28, 1863. At the age of six years he emigrated with his parents from France to this country and settled in Linn Township, Illinois, where he spent the earlier part of his life.
He was baptized and received into the membership of the Roanoke Mennonite Church, near Eureka, Illinois, in the year 1878. On January 12, 1888, he was united in marriage to Barbara Bachman. After his marriage he moved to Metamora Township where he engaged in farming. On July 8, 1894, he was ordained to the office of minister at the Metamora Church. On April 24, 1898, he was ordained to the office of Bishop, in which capacity he served the congregation for forty-three years. In his later years he retired from farming and moved into the town of Metamora, where he resided until April 7, 1949, when he passed away at the age of 85 years, 5 months and 9 days.
Brother Schrock was a peace-loving servant of the Lord. He was always willing to go the second mile in order to maintain peace and unity in the church. As a fellow minister he was considerate and kind hearted, always endeavoring to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace. It indeed was a real pleasure and inspiration to work with him from the beginning of my ministry until the close of his active service for God and the church.
He had a deep concern for the spiritual welfare of souls and for the preservation of the doctrines of the Mennonite Church. In his preaching and teaching, he, like the Apostle Paul, ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. His was not a dry-eyed ministry. When there was a departure from the faith on the part of the laity, his soul was disturbed and his heart saddened. He frequently remarked that he keenly felt his responsibility as the shepherd of the flock, as one that watched for their souls and as one that will be called upon to give an account unto God.
He took his task as a minister seriously, and entered wholeheartedly into the preaching of the Word. At the time of his ordination to the ministry, the transition was being made from preaching in the German language to the English. It was very apparent that he was a man that was called for such a time as this since he could speak fluently in both languages. His ability along this line made it possible to make the change gradually, and gracefully, without serious disruption.
During the fifty years of faithful service in the ministry of the church, he saw many changes take place, some that he deeply regretted, and interpreted as a departure from the faith, and a compromise with the world. Although he failed to see the wisdom of the change, he did not refuse to cooperate sympathetically with the conference and the church, but continued to preach the “unsearchable riches of Christ.”
During the earlier part of his ministry, he was very active in the work of the church, serving a number of times as moderator of the Western A.M. Conference (of which the Illinois Conference was a member at the time), also serving on important committees of the Conference and church at frequent intervals. --by H. R. Schertz

Schrock, Andrew A. (1863-1949)
Andrew A. Schrock (1863-1949), an Mennonite (Mennonite Church) bishop, was born in Alsace, France, on 28 October 1863, and came to the Metamora community from Alsace at the age of six. On 12 January 1888, he married Barbara Bachman; eight children were born to this union. On 8 July 1894, he was ordained as a minister and on 24 April 1898, as bishop. He served the Metamora Mennonite Church faithfully and was also used widely in other congregations in the Western Amish Mennonite Conference. He was moderator of this Conference on six different occasions.

Schrock was a kindly man with an absorbing interest in the welfare of the church and his responsibility for preserving the faith. He was able to adapt himself to the times in such a way that the congregations under his oversight were able to make the necessary transitions without undue friction. Bishop Schrock was singularly humble and sincere, and a faithful and worthy servant of the church during a very difficult period. He died 7 April 1949.

SCHROCK.-On the 26th of September, 1898, at the home of her parents, Andrew and Catherine Schrock, seven miles north-west of Roanoke, Ill., Elizabeth Schrock, at the tender age of 13 years, 4 months and 1 day. It seemed hard to give dear Lizzie up, but the Lord knew best. She had made known her desire to unite with God's people some time before and left her place here on earth with the blessed assurance that she was going to meet her Savior. Father and mother, three brothers and three sisters, together with a large number of friends, are left to mourn the loss of a loving and lovable daughter, sister and friend. She was laid to rest in the Roanoke burying ground Sept. 28th; the funeral was conducted by John Smith and Peter Summer.

Sommer, Joseph C., son of Christian and Barbara (Claudon) Sommer, was born Dec. 9, 1871, in France; died at the Gibson City, (Ill.) Community Hospital, Sept. 23, 1956; aged 84 y. 9m. 14 d. He had been ill for several months and was a patient at the hospital for about 6 weeks. He came to the United States in 1891 and began farming in the Bellflower area, where he lived until 1929, where he moved to Fisher where he resided until about 6 weeks before his death, when they moved to Gibson City. Besides his wife, he leaves 3 sons (Nelson, Foosland; Raymond, Saybrook; and Chester, Fisher, Ill.), 8 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and 2 sisters. At an early age he accepted Christ as his Saviour and united with the Mennonite Church in France. When he moved to the U. S., he transferred his membership to the East Bend Mennonite Church where he maintained an active interest as long as he was able. Funeral services were conducted on Sept. 25 at the East Bend Church in charge of Howard J. Zehr and assisted by Harold Zehr and J. A. Heiser.

“Christopher’s middle initial “B” stands for “Burkey,” his mother’s maiden name. We are told that all of the boys of that family used that same initial, apparently proud of the Burkey name.
His parents were Amish. In later years his father became an invalid. This grandfather is remembered by his grandchildren as sitting in his wheelchair by the window so he could look outside. He was a very large person, eventually weighing over 300 lbs; his helpful slightly-built wife had a hump in her back. As was the way in those days, the grandchildren were sent to help these grandparents when they grew older.
They lived in Nebraska which is considered part of the Midwest “Heartland.” At that time small farms raised most of the food products for the nation. The frontier was considered closed in 1890 when Chris was about nine years old. At the close of Civil War, farmers constituted 60 percent of the work force. The farmers settled land in a westward movement; these frontier people did hand labor and used horses to pull simple equipment in contrast to the present corporate farms with huge expensive machinery.
I understand that Grandpa Schrock did not own land but farmed land owned by others. He owned a combine and was hired to work in fields. He was a very tall, handsome person who enjoyed life, but it is said he did not accumulate much money. He was strict with his children. Mother said if one of his children got a spanking in school, Grandpa Schrock would deliver another spanking with a belt at home. If a teacher checked the space titled “Talks too much,” this also meant a spanking at home.
“We have a copy of the Public Sale Notice for the auction that was held by Chris when selling his home. The auction notice states, “Two bedroom, full basement, 3 lots one block west and one block north of the schoolhouse, Lots l, 2, and 3, Block 10. Remodeled only a few years ago, furniture, canned fruit and fruit jars, wash tubs, snow shovel.”
He then moved to the town of Geneva to be nearer his children as he was in ill health because of cancer.
“There was a reunion in the 1980’s of the Christian C. Schrock family, Christ B. Schrock’s parents, at the Geneva Lion’s Club Building in Geneva with about 260 people attending. This family had become widespread as relatives arrived from California, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Missouri, Tennessee, Illinois, and Arizona. This was the first time many had seen each other for a number of years, and some had never met previously. “

At the age of sixteen he united with the East Bend Mennonite Church near Fisher, Ill. March 1, 1910, he was united in marriage to Katherine Oyer, Fisher, Ill. To this union were born 7 children. Three of theses (Elwood Louis, Ellis Lee, and Ilene May) died in infancy. He and his family lived near Fisher, Ill., until 1918, when they moved to Manson, Iowa, and in 1929 to Clarksville, Mich. Later they moved to Lowell, Mich., where he was residing at the time of his death. He leaves his beloved companion, 4 children (Raymond E., Paxton, Ill.; June E.-Mrs. A. H. Stormazand, Lowell, Mich.; Ralph O., Brimley, Mich.; and Velma K.-Mrs. Lowell Birkey, Amboy, Ind.), 12 grandchildren, 4 brother (Andrew, John, and Will of Manson, Iowa; Joe, Clarksville, Mich.), 3 sisters (Mrs. Dave Springer, Foosland, Ill.; Mrs. A. Schrock.--Joseph Y. Schrock, son of Joseph and Bella (Yordy) Schrock, was born Sept. 26, 1899, near Thurman, Colo.; died Oct. 7, 1920, near Albany, Oreg.; aged 21 y. 11 d. Death was caused by being killed by a horse. He was taken to the hospital, but soon passed away. He was married to Mary Steckley Nov. 7, 1918. He gave his heart to God in his youth and was a member of the A. M. Mennonite Church. He leaves a sorrowful companion and son, father, mother, 6 brothers, 3 sisters, 1 grandmother, and a host of friends to mourn his early departure. Funeral services conducted by C. R. Gerig at the house and at the Fair View Church, by Fred Gingerich (Text, I Cor. 15:21), and Lee Schlegel (text, Job 14:14.), after which his remains were laid to rest in the River Side Cemetery at Albany, Oreg.

Schrock.-William Schrock was born Aug. 19, 1903, near Thurman, Colo.; passed into eternity Dec. 24, 1941, near McMinnville, Oreg.; aged 38 y. 4 m. 5 d. Death was caused by hemorrhage. He spent the first three years of his life in Colorado, then going to Shickley, Nebr., with his parents where they made their home for three years. In 1909 the family moved to Albany, Oreg., where he has since made his home. He was married in March, 1925, to Mary Steckley Schrock. To this union the following children were born: Roy Earl, Alice Anne, Lillian Jane, and Violet Mary. He is survived by his companion, 2 daughters (Alice and Lillian), 1 stepson (Marvin Leonard Schrock), 1 grandson (Donald Marvin Schrock), his parents (Joseph and Bella Yordy Schrock), 5 brothers (David, of Tangent; Elmer, of Lebanon; Raymond, of Ft. Canby, Wash.; Melvin and Le Roy, of Albany), and 3 sisters (Mrs. Emma Reeser and Mrs. Anna Roth of Albany; and Miss Fannie Schrock of La Junta, Colo.). One brother (Joseph) preceded him in death in 1920. He accepted Christ in his youth and was a faithful witness unto the end. He expressed a desire and a readiness to depart this life and to be with his Lord and Saviour. Funeral services were conducted Dec. 27, at the home, and at the Fairview Church where he was a member. Services in charge of Bros. N. M. Birky and Henry Gerig. Scripture reading (Psalms 23 and 39) by Bro. Gerig and sermon by Bro. Birky (Text, Rev. 14: 13). Interment in the Riverside Cemetery.

Daughter of Joseph and Bella (Yordy) Schrock, was born near Shickley, Nebr., July 23, 1907; died at Mennonite Village, Albany, Oreg., June 28, 1986; aged 78 y. Surviving are 4 brothers (Dave, Melvin, Ray, and Leroy), and one sister (Ann Roth). She was preceded in death by one sister and 3 brothers. She was a charter member of Lebanon Mennonite church. Funeral services were in charge of Richard Headings and Robert Williams; interment in Fairview Mennonite Cemetery.

When she was 2 years old, the family moved to Albany, Ore., where she received her elementary education. At age 22, she became dissatisfied with housework in California. Later she was asked to be Matron at Hesston College in Kansas. She combined this with a full load of study. Then a request came for her to train as an x-ray technician for the La Junta (Colo.) Hospital. After graduating from Goshen College in 1942, she went to La Junta and became the first registered x-ray technician in the Mennonite constituency. She worked 5 years at La Junta. Her life after that was filled with many things: Three years with MCC in the Philippines, 12 years as x-ray tech at the new Lebanon hospital, Greece to 'mother' the PAX men after WWII, 5 more years at Lebanon hospital, a world tour, revisit to Greece and the Philippines, to Zaire to help Dr. Zook there, serve as hostess at the Guest House in Washington DC, attend the Mennonite World Conference in France in 1984. She was active in the Wheels on Wheels program until her death.
