Yordy, -- Elizabeth, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Saltzman) Roeschley, was born near Spring Bay, Ill., July 20, 1862; passed away Feb.3, 1953; aged 90 y. 6 m. 14 d. On Jan. 1, 1882, at the Roanoke Mennonite Church, she was united in marriage to Joseph Yordy, who preceded her in death in 1925. Surviving are 3 daughters (Ella, Anna, and Mrs. Josephine Schrock, Eureka, Ill.), 5 sons (Aaron, Peoria, Ill.; Ezra, Eureka, Ill.; Walter, Chicago, Ill.; Jonas, Eureka, Ill.; and Alvin, Denver, Colo.), 15 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. One son (Lewis) also preceded her in death. In her youth she united with the Mennonite Church and for many years taught a German Sunday-school class. Funeral services were in charge of John L. Harnish and J. D. Hartzler, with burial in the church cemetery.
    —————————
“Elizabeth taught her husband, Joseph, to read. She was quiet, determined, with a good sense of humor. She was frugal, a good gardener, and managed her household well, often smoothing over differences in the family--a leveler. Elizabeth was affected for many years with arthritis, and was an invalid during her later years in life, finally confined to her home because of her helpless condition.

“Grandma Yordy outlived her husband by many years...Grandma must have had severe arthritis. She walked so slowly that she had to be called to dinner at least ten minutes before serving time. Aunt Ella and Uncle Aaron were always there at the farm taking care of ‘Ma.’ Later, when they moved back to Eureka, Uncle Jonas and Aunt Anna appeared on the scene to take care of their aging and bedfast mother....”

A Eureka newspaper article reported Elizabeth being honored at a surprise birthday party dinner at her home three miles south of Eureka, arranged by Mrs. William Kane of Metamora. The article went on to mention her parents, “Mr. and Mrs. Roeschley who lived two miles north of Eureka. She [Elizabeth] remembers how she would walk to Eureka with eggs in a market basket and take groceries home for the week. She attended church services at what was called Black Partrige, across from the Partrige cemetery, west of Washington, and also remembers well the old “grist mill” along the Illinois river [where her father was miller].”

Slagel, and since then for a little over 40 years they have lived in the vicinity of Flanagan, Ill. She is survived by her husband, 7 sons (Arthur, Amos, George, Willis, Edwin, Gilbert, Milton), 4 daughters, Alma, Emma, Edna, Irene), 15 grandchildren, 1 brother (John, Flanagan, Ill.), 1 sister (Mrs. Joe. Yordy, Eureka, Ill.), 1 daughter, Mrs. John Neuhauser, preceded her to the spirit world in 1923. About two weeks previous to her death, she underwent an operation which seemed to be successful. She was getting along well and expected to go home soon. On the evening of her death after eating supper and going to bed as usual, she suddenly felt faint. Her daughter Edna, a senior nurse at the hospital, was called from duty. Mother told her she was dying and asked that the rest of the family be sent for, but death came very shortly afterward, the immediate cause being a blood clot in the blood stream. Funeral services were held at the Waldo Mennonite Church on Oct. 22, 1928, conducted by Bros. A. C. Good of Sterling, Ill., and J. D. Hartzler of Gridley, Ill. Interment in the Waldo Cemetery. Among the things for which she will be remembered by those who loved her and knew her best are her patience, even temper and sympathy, her trust in an abiding Heavenly Father, her confidence in those about her, and her sacrifices for others.

She was united in marriage to Peter M. Schertz of Metamora, Ill., March 5, 1878, who preceded her in death Sept. 2, 1913. To this union 7 children were born: William J. and Ben F. of Gridley; Mrs. Anna Schrock of Orrville, O.; Mattie, Eureka; Mrs. Emma Hartzler, Gridley; Mrs. Carry Grieser, Panola; Lora, at home. She is also preceded in death by 2 grandchildren and 3 brothers (Peter, John, and Joseph). She accepted Christ as her personal saviour in her youth, united with the Mennonite church, and lived a consistent Christian life to the end. Quiet and unassuming in her manner, her heart went out in deepest sympathy to those in need. She enjoyed a wide acquaintance and in the homes of these friends she was always welcome. In her passing the family loses a devoted mother and grandmother, the community an exemplary friend and neighbor. Thus closes a Christian life of the allotted three score years and ten that was ever filled by the noblest desires and best of interests. Saltzman.--John H. Saltzman was born near Lacon, Ill., Jan. 10, 1863; died at the Mercy Hospital at Burlington, Iowa, Aug. 23, 1924; aged 61 y. 7 m. 13 d. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior in his youth, uniting with the Amish Mennonite Church and remained a faithful member until death. On Jan. 19, 1888, he was united in marriage with Anna Steinman. Six children were born to this union. They lived in Livingston Co., Ill. until in the spring of 1903, when they moved to a farm he had purchased near Wayland, Iowa. About three months ago while assisting one of his sons in moving, his left ankle was painfully bruised, which necessitated the amputation of the foot. He was, however, recovering nicely from this injury when on Saturday noon members of his family invited him to take a little trip in the automobile which would be a change and serve as recreation after being confined to the house much of the time. They drove over to Kingston, Iowa, for a little visit with a relative who was helping with the threshing. After the visit they started home at about four o'clock in the afternoon but got only about a mile on their way when going up a hill the driver missed his gear and the car slowly backed off a bank about ten feet high, rolling over and landing on its wheels on the road below. Evidently Bro. Saltzman was thrown out and the car rolled over him. The rest of the company escaped with minor bruises, but Bro. Saltzman's condition was considered serious from the first. A doctor was called and he was hurried to the hospital where medical attention was given him but he passed away almost immediately. One daughter preceded him in death. He leaves his deeply bereaved wife, one daughter (Mrs. Sam Wyse), four sons (Elmer of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Eli of Donnelson, Iowa, and Ollie and Edwin at home), one brother, two sisters, five grandchildren, and a large concourse of friends and neighbors to mourn their loss. In the death of Bro. Saltzman the Church loses a faithful member, the community a good, honest neighbor, and the family a kind and affectionate husband, father, and grandfather. May we all bow submissively to him who holds the destines of lives in His hand and by faith hold on to the Savior who is our Advocate with the Father that when our last hour comes we may be ready to answer His call. The funeral was held at the Sugar Creek Church, conducted by the home ministers, Daniel Graber and Simon Gingerich. Texts, Psa. 103 and I Sam. 20:3. Interment in the cemetery nearby.
