  1. 1.  Caspar Schrag was born on 13 Dec 1685 in Leumberg, Wynigen, Bern, SW; died in Somerset Co., PA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • HIST: "Schrag-Schrocks came to America at various times and by a number of routes--before 1800 via northern Alsace and the Palatinate, and after 1870 via Volhynia, Russia. The Schrags were one of only three prominent Amish names that originate in the Emmental (along with Troyer and Schwarzentruber)." (This couple may have had a daughter Elisabeth (b. 1722) who is now linked to Caspar Schrag who married Elisabeth Weiss. () It is possible that the Johann Schrag family of “The Children’s Blizzard” was a descendant of Caspar and Elisabeth Leyenberger.

    Notes:

The Schrag surname is interpreted as a nickname for a carpenter or a cabinetmaker. "Schrage" in German means a holder or frame from crossed woods used for framework building. The spelling of the surname changed to Schrack, or Chraque in France--Schrock in America. "Schrag/Schrock comes from Schrage (an old name for a special wood combination.)"

In Southern Alsace along the Rhine River, south and east of Colmar, refugees came directly to these towns from Switzerland. Among the refugees listed at Jebsheim after 1700 were: 1700-Ulrich Birky, Steffisburg, worker; 1712-Gaspard (Casper) Schrag and Elisabeth Leyenberger of Wynigen.

!!This individual, Caspar b. 1685, who married Elsbeth Leyenberger, can be traced back to Switzerland, and through him all of the other Anabaptist Schrag branches.

Virgil Miller, in his book "Both Sides of the Ocean" lists the refugees at Jebsheim, Alsace after 1700 and includes the fact that Gaspard (Caspar) Schrag and Elisabeth Leyenberg of Wynigen were married in 1712 (evidently in Jebsheim). Virgil Miller's research is probably correct.  This means son Caspar was born no later than September/October of 1711 (in Wynigen?), since Anne was born in June of 1712.

Caspar, as well as other Schrag families moved into the Palatinate area around Zweibrücken. They lived in various places in the Palatinate, including Heckenaschbacherhof, Kaplaneyhof and Ingeweilerhof before leaving for America or going to Lorraine.

Schrag-Schrocks came to America at various times and by a number of routes--before 1800 via northern Alsace and the Palatinate, and after 1870 via Volhynia, Russia. The Schrags were one of three prominent Amish names that originate in the Emmental (along with Troyer and Schwarzentruber).

"In a list of Anabaptists in the Staatsarchiv in Bern, Switzerland, two brothers, Christian and Bendicht Schrag, sons of Ulrich Schrag, are named in 1765. They move from Wynigen-Leumberg in Switzerland to the Munstertal. About this time Schrags of Zweibrücken were already living here. Ulrich Schrag, who is leaseholder (Bestander) on the Ernstweilerhof in 1735, was a son of Caspar Schrag. A Casper Schrag is on the Ingeweilerhof in 1761. It is not clear whether these two individuals were father and son or brothers; the author assumes the latter. In that case, they would both be sons of Caspar Schrag, the father of Ulrich Schrag, who does not otherwise appear in the Palatinate. The following arrangement of descendants of the two brothers has not been proven and is based in part on assumptions."

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Immigration: 1785, America

    Notes:

“There is very little information out there on this second son of Caspar Schrag b. 1685. He would be the second child of Caspar’s to migrate to America. J. Virgil Miller states that the Johannes Schrock family left for America in 1785.
Karen Schrock Jones shared the following. [The group travelling with Johannes] touched down in Lancaster before moving to Brothers Valley, PA. From there some went to Somerset/Johnstown, some to Canada, and [Johannes and] the rest to Holmes county OH. ... They stayed in the Walnut Creek area for a couple of generations before moving to east central IN settling in Miami county. Around this time, they quit being identified as either Amish or Mennonite and also their name was changed from Schrock to Shrock.”

    Migrated to America in 1785.

    Immigration:
Lancaster, PA, then Brothers Valley. Then some went to Somerset/Johnstown, some to Canada;Johannes and rest to Holmes Co., Ohio near Walnut Creek, before moving to East Central Indiana in Miami Co.

  5. 6.  Niclaus Schrag Descendancy chart to this point (1.Caspar1) was born in 1717; died in 1748.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Immigration: 24 Sep 1753, Philadelphia, PA

    Notes:

The story of Niclaus Schrag b. 1717 is to say the least a very confusing one. Much of the confusion seem to stem from the assumption that the three Schrock men who came to Somerset Co. PA in the mid-1700s were brothers. DNA results seem to indicate otherwise. In fact there were likely two different families involved. The following scenario is derived from notes by Greta Schrock compiled in 2015.
An interesting note Greta shared is that once in America Claus changed his name to Michael, which would help explain the loss of a paper trail.
The name Niclaus Schrock was found in the registry of a ship named "Peggy” that arrived at Philadelphia PA in 1753. One small problem with this is that Peter Schrag states in his family tree that Niclaus died in 1748, at the age of 31. The registry said he was 34 and had 3 children with him. One child was aged 8 and there were 2 others, ages unknown. Using the birth date of 1745 for Caspar would make him the 8 year old. Mary Louise also quotes from a different source saying, “one of the boys, presumed 7 years of age, was very ill and was carried from Philadelphia to their first home in Berks County Pa on the back of his older brother.”
In July the 1984 Issue of “Mennonite Family History” is a deed showing that Casper got a deed to land in Somerset County, Pa in 1773 and an article by Joe Irvin says this is about year Casper came to America, which if you go by the 1745 date, he would have been 28 and at this age. He could have returned to Europe for family and returned around 1770. This land is where the old Schrock cemetery is today. There is also a findgraveIndex of a Casper Schrock 1745, who married a Catherine Bloug. There is little doubt that a young Caspar was accompanied by two brothers and we might even concede their name were John and Ulric. But not the two by the same name who came 15 or so years later.

Niclaus and (2?) sons migrated to America in 1754.

    Notes:

Andréas has been included as a child of Caspar by several researchers. However, his birth date seems not to fit with being Caspar’s son, but perhaps Andréas’ birth date is incorrect. It could also be that Caspar’s birthdate is incorrect or that he had a wife before Barbe Rouvenac.

Gondrexange is situated at the edge of a lake with the same name, between Rechicourt le Chateau and Heming. Eight km from Rechicourt le Chateau, twelve km from Sarrebourg and 72 km from Nancy. In 1836 there were 1027 people living in the village. By 2001 that number had dwindled to 464. A farm 2 km away called Ketzing had 18 inhabitants in 1836.

“At the edge of the village (Gondrexange), next to a large recreational lake, a narrow lane named ‘rue de la vieux moulin,’ or ‘old mill street,’ winds down below the edge of the main highway. Here can be seen the trace of a small mill stream and the ruins of a small stone mill structure, overgrown with weeds. Though not conclusively documented, this site seems a likely candidate for the Schrag residence and site of Joseph Oyer’s marriage (to Catherine Schrag, daughter of second wife, Marie Blazer).”

    (also found on French documents as 'Caspard' and 'Gaspard'), was born circa 1744 and died on Sommerhof at Neuviller, Lower Alsace March 15, 1794. He was a miller at Bischwald Mill and a cultivator on Belgrade farm at Bistroff after 1772, and at the time of his death was a tailor at Rhodes. His civil death entry from Neuviller described him as a 50-year-old Anabaptist living at Rhodes (it is likely that he was visiting the Sommers on Sommerhof at the time of his death). Witnesses were tenant farmer Jean Sommer, 63, and day laborer Jean Müller, 59 (Jean Sommer, born circa 1731, was the father of Joseph Sommer, and grandfather to the Sommers who came to Tazewell County in 1834). “ }

On Sommerhof. 25 Ventose 2. Caspar Schraag, 50 year old Anabaptist living at Rhodes. Witnesses: Tenant farmer Jean Sommer of Sommerhof, 63, and day laborer Jean Muller.
The witnesses may not have known the exact date of Caspar’s birth, and gave a nice round number as what they thought was a probable age. Witnesses were Jean Sommer, 63 (tenant farmer) and Jean Muller, 59 (day laborer). Jean, b. abt. 1731 was the father of Joseph Sommer and grandfather to the Sommers who arrived in Tazewell Co., IL in 1834.

    Buried:
There are remains of a Sommers cemetery at Sommerhof, so Caspar could have been buried there, or the body removed back to Rhodes. There are no identifiable stones at either place.

  2. 9.  Anna Schrag (Chraque) Descendancy chart to this point (2.Caspar2, 1.Caspar1) was born about 1748-1750; died before 1797.

    Notes:

“It is strongly suspected that Anna Chraque was a daughter of Caspar Schrag and Elisabeth Weiss.

Anne Chraque's proposed family relationship is based on circumstance. Though there may have been other Swiss Schrags in Lorraine that we have not identified, only one branch of one family has been identified as Amish Mennonite. Caspar Schrag and Elisabeth Weiss had a son Caspar (circa 1744-1794) who married Barbe Rouvenacht and Marie Blaser. He worked as a miller at Bischwald Mill and a cultivator on Belgrade farm at Bistroff. Thus he was a business partner with the Engel family.

Their son Joseph Schrag (1772-1830) was born on Belgrade farm but lived at Gondrexange. He married Marie Engel (1774-circa 1800)…. Note that Anne's son Joseph Cachot/Gascho also lived at Gondrexange. This is a coincidence in a tiny community (though the population has grown in two centuries to its present 490). Note also that Joseph Cachot/Gascho's immigration companions in 1831 included Peter Engel. If Anne was a sister to Caspar (circa 1744-1794), the only documented Amish Mennonite Schrag in her age bracket in the region, then her parents were Caspar Schrag and Elisabeth Weiss.“

Family/Spouse: François Gascho (Cachot). François (son of Simon Gascho (Cachot) and Sarah Leibrock) was born before 1750; died before 1797. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    • Residence: ?, Zweibrücken, Rheinland-Pfalz, GR
    • Immigration: 1837, Tavistock, Ontario, Canada
    • Residence: 1837, Munich, Bavaria, GR

    Notes:

This couple farmed on the Freudenbergerhof estate near Zweibrücken. The family moved to Bavaria where Daniel was born in 1813. When the family applied for permission to emigrate, Jacob and daughter Catherine were living at Gradhof, Giesing, Munich.

In 1837, Daniel was at Freimann and father Jacob and daughters Magdalena and Catherine were at Giesing.

All of the family except wife Magdalena emigrated to Canada.
    —————————————
The Schrag family lived on different farms as tenants in Bavaria. The last place was in Giesing / Munich 1837.
In the state archive in Munich I found under Fazikel RA 1730 following entry:
From here, the familie applied for emigration to Upper Canada. Six family members filed for emigration in March 1837. Their fortune was 1000 Guldiers. The family came from the “Bavaria Rhine circel“ also Palatinate.
    —————————————
Regarding the military discharge certificates for the Schrag brothers, I have found a relevant and interesting paragraph in Hermann Hage's German dissertation on Amish Mennonites in Bavaria: Translation by Sem Sutter, 2020

“The three brothers Josef, Johann and Daniel Schrag, born on the Kaplaneihof in Pfalz-Zweibrücken or in Bavaria, performed their military service in the Bavarian army before 1835, although the family had lived since 1812 on the Gradhof, today in Kösching, Eichstatt, which would have included them in the exemption from military service for colonists from the left bank of the Rhine. Apparently they did not have the knowledge or the means to protect their sons from military service. In 1838 they were finally able to emigrate from Munich to Canada.”

(From Herbert Holly on 8 Nov 2019: In the folder from the state archive Munich 11.8.2019:
    Faszikel Mennoniten:
Military discharge certificate: No. 82 - Johann Schrag, Joseph Schrag, Daniel Schrag.
Report from the captain of the ship “Altona” from the death of Peter Schrag of Palatinate.)

Widower Jacob emigrated in 1837. According to Holly, his application for emigration documents was dated May 26, 1837. A National Archives list of passengers arriving at Baltimore from foreign ports in September 1837 shows Jacob Schrag, 84; John, 32; Daniel, 24; Magdalene, 36; Catherina, 34; and Catherina Miller, 13. An archives index card says they arrived Oct. 1, 1837.

    From Joe Staker
    The Schrags of Kösching

Ulrich Schrag and Marie Stalter were the parents of Jacob Schrag. He was born on the Gersbergerhof estate (three miles northeast of the city of Zweibrücken) in July 1760, and died at Wilmot, Ontario April 25, 1838.
Jacob married Magdalena Holly. She was born at Nehwiller-près-Woerth, Lower Alsace in 1767, and died at Wilmot Oct. 29, 1838, a daughter of minister Jörg/Georg Holly and Barbara Bürki. They farmed on the Freudenbergerhof estate near Zweibrücken.

Their son Christian Schrag was born there Dec. 24, 1798. He married Elizabeth Bürki/Birkey, who was born circa Jan. 24, 1802. They farmed at Kösching, above Ingolstadt. Kösching is adjacent to Hellmannsberg, where the Sutters leased an estate in 1811.
Christian died at Unterföhring (a suburb on the northeast side of Munich) Aug. 26, 1831.
Christian's parents [s/b father only], brothers, and sisters went to Canada in 1837. Elizabeth also emigrated from Europe with her children, arriving at New Orleans in 1846. At first they lived in Butler County, where Barbara may have met and become engaged to Joseph Heiser.
Heiser went to Dillon to work on railroad tracks in 1848. He labored on the rails to Peoria until 1850, but came away with little savings. Joseph and Barbara married Feb. 4, 1851, and lived at Elm Grove.
Elizabeth lived to be 90, and died Jan. 24, 1892. She is buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery as 'Elizabeth Schrag.' Herald of Truth, February 1892: "On the 24th of January, 1892, near Pekin, Ill., of the infirmities of old age, Elizabeth, widow of Christian Schrag, aged 90 years. She had been a widow for 31 years [61 years]. She leaves four children, 23 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren. Her last words were, 'Come, Lord Jesus.' Buried in the Pleasant Grove graveyard. Funeral services by D. Roth, P. Ropp, Em. and Joseph Litwiller, and Joseph Buercky, of Tiskilwa, Ill."
The children of Christian Schrag and Elizabeth Bürki/Birkey include:

She was born at St. Valentin, Indre Oct. 5, 1835, and died Dec. 20, 1920, a daughter of Michael Zimmerman and his second wife Magdalena Erb. He emigrated to New Orleans, La., in 1846, and in 1850 came to Pekin, Tazewell Co., where in 1852 he married Mary Zimmerman. They resided at this place until 1868 when they moved to Nebraska Twp., being of the earliest settlers. Twelve children were born to them. Funeral services were held at the house by Bro. D. M. Slagle and at the Church by Bro. Dan Orendorff in German and Bro. Geo. Sommer in English. Buried in the Waldo Cemetery." Gospel Herald, January 1921: "Mary Zimmerman was born near Paris, France, Nov. 5, 1835; died from the effects of a fall (pneumonia also setting in causing her much suffering which she bore patiently) Dec. 20, 1920; aged 85 y. 1 m. 15 d. She was converted in her youth, was received into the A.M. Church, and remained faithful. She had a smile and a pleasant word for all. Sh e came to America with her parents in 1838 locating near Canton, Ohio, where they resided until 1841, when they came to Pekin, Ill. In 1852 she was married to Christian Schrock. In 1868 they came to Livingston Co. near where Flanagan is now situated. Twelve children were born to them. Six of them with the husband preceded her. She leaves 6 children, 24 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 1 brother. Funeral services were held at the Waldo A.M. Church by the home ministers, Dec. 22. Burial in the Waldo Cemetery."
    4. Barbara Schrock was born at Kösching Aug. 17, 1828, and died in Tazewell County Oct. 30, 1911. On Feb. 4, 1851 in Tazewell County she married Joseph Heiser. He was born in Bavaria March 1, 1818. His headstone at Pleasant Grove Cemetery says he died Nov. 9, 1892 at 71 years, 8 months, 8 days.

    • Residence: 1822, Rhodes, Moselle, FR
    • Residence: 1826, Rhodes, Moselle, FR

    Notes:

At the time of Joseph’s brother Jean’s marriage in 1797, he was living at Moulin Les Bachats near Rhodes. Bachats is attached to Rhodes, 9 km north of Gondrexange. There is a walled Anabaptist cemetery at the edge of town, bordering a cow pasture, where Pelsy, Esch, Abresol families, and more, are buried.

The 'ferme des Les Bachats' at Rhodes is still operational and maintains an inn. It is located on a peninsula in L'Étang de Stock (Stock Pond). A bachat is a feeding trough for cattle, indicating that it may have once been a dairy farm.

Joseph married his first wife, Marie Engel at Alzing farm near Gosselming in 1798. Very soon after they were living at Gondrexange, for their first and only child (Joseph, who lived only 5 years) was born there. Marie died there, possibly as a result of child birth complications. A second time Joseph went to Alzing to marry his second wife, Marie Neuhauser, but returned to Gondrexange to live and work. Their first three sons and one daughter (Anne, who evidently died as an infant) were born between 1801 and 1806.

Joseph and his wives could have lived at Domaine Ketzing for a time, a nobleman’s possession, who hired workers to farm and run the mill, blacksmith workers, brick kilns, etc., but this isn’t documented. Living quarters were provided in the woods some distance from the main chateaus. Today one can find a few foundation stones of buildings, and the remains of a well that served the workers. (2012) There was no persecution of Anabaptists during this time at Ketzing, as the Duke of Lorraine protected them. Today Ketzing is owned by an insurance company: a newer building is used for training seminars. The domaine is part of the forestry department and the chateaus provide lodging for hunters.

But more than likely the family lived at the mill in Gondrexange, since Joseph was the miller there for a number of years from about 1800 to 1811.

By 1811 the family had moved to Imling near Saarebourg. They lived at one of the three mills along the Saare River, Remeling, when their first daughter was born. The other two mills were Rimling, and Rot (Roth) (also called Rotmuhle). All three mills were situated side by side along the banks of the Saare. Eleven years later Joseph and Marie were back at Bachats, and were there in 1826. No doubt they lived there continuously until Joseph’s death in 1830. Marie was still living in 1826, but what happened to her after that is still unknown.

“Joseph Schrack, 33, miller, ...witnessed the civil birth record of Johannes Gascho, Born on 8 Jan, 1806, son of Joseph Gascho, lease-manager of the agricultural property called Canardiere in Gondrexange, and Katharina Swalter.”

“Gondrexange had two mills, one was sacred for the construction of the Marne-Rhine canal. It is logical that in a given period an Anabaptist was a miller. Joseph Schrag from Bellegarde, commune of Bistroff, had the mill turned from about 1800 to 1807. He was married to Marie Neuhauser who gave him several children in Gondrexange. Did he then go to Rhodes where he died in 1830?

“His sister Catherine, born in Oderfang, Saint-Avold, married the mill boy Joseph Oyer in 1804 and went to Niderhoff's mill. Joseph Schrag was probably replaced or was he in competition with André Schertz enumerated in 1809 as head of the family. He was the son of Christian Schertz and Elisabeth Reitiger. The only act that reveals his presence is his testimony at the death of his father at the age of 55 years.”

    Notes:

Andreas’ descendants migrated to America 1843, 1855.

Hermann Guth says, “Andréas probably belongs here.” However, his birth date doesn’t seem to fit. But there is probably a connection, since Jean Hirgie was a witness to Anna’s marriage and listed as a cousin.

After Suzanne Bachman died, Andréas moved to Lorraine in France and married Suzanne Hirchi before 1781. Lived in Oron (F 57528) near Chateau-Salins in 1781 and in
1797 in Grostenquin near Linstroff. Andreas was named as an “anne Baptiste” miller at the mill of Tenchel in the birth document of son Christian. The mother of Christian is named as Susan Hirche.

Andréas later settled in Vergaville (F 57708) near Dieuze, where he was living with son Andréas at the time of his death in 1809. He was miller at the Tenchel in Lorraine.

In 1805, André’ signed the birth record of his granddaughter, Catherine Schrag, daughter of son André’ and Anne Pelsey.

Translation of death document by Neil Ann Stuckey Levine:
    2) Death of André Schrag, widower, 60.  On June 13, 1809, 7 p.m., ... in Vergaville, canton of Dieuze, arrondissement of Château-Salins, department of Meurthe [department of Moselle today], appeared André Schrag, 30, and Joseph Reisinger, 56, both millers, and Gabriel Pierre, 30, leather worker [no French dictionary I have here at home has an entry for "chamoiseur"], all three living in Vergaville, the first a son and the other two acquaintances of André Schrag, fellow miller ["compagnon" can also mean apprentice, but that would hardly apply to the deceased at 60], living in Vergaville, and they have declared that today, at 4 p.m., the said André Schrag, 60, native of Deux-Ponts (Mont-Tonnere) [the short-lived French department of Mont-Tonnere, encompassing Zweibrücken, i.e., Deux-Ponts, in the Palatinate, dates to Napoleon's tremendous expansion of greater France], widow in his second marriage of Suzanne Hergë [Hirschi], died at the home of the first declarer [his like-named son].  And the declarers signed the present death document with me, after it had been read aloud to them, with the exception of André Schrag, son of the deceased, who declared that he does not know how to write or to sign his name.

André’s descendants are compiled in the voluminous first edition of “Who’s Who in The Schrock Family”, and printed in February 2001 by Kevin J. Willems.
