History and Heritage

Froidefontaine is a French commune located in the department of the territory of Belfort in Franche-Comté region. Its inhabitants are called Froidefontainiens. The village is located on the banks of the Muddy River, a river born of the union of the Madeleine and the Saint-Nicolas.

Froidefontaine, renowned from the beginning of the 12th century thanks to its priory, has the privilege of having its existence as a founding myth. As a myth, it is rather a legend, that of Saint-Maimbœuf who was assassinated in the 8th or 9th century by disbelievers near the cold fountain near which he was buried. The miracles that would have happened subsequently on his tomb impressed so much the people of the country that Ermentrude, widow of Thierry 1st, count of Montbéliard-Ferrette, gave on March 8, 1105 to the abbey of Cluny his possessions of Froidefontaine for the Foundation of a priory. It then completed this endowment with the domain and the parish of Grosne, which then covered a large territory including Vellescot, Boron, Brebotte, Eschêne, Recouvrance, Normanvillars and the chapel of Petit-Croix. The priory prospered for centuries, at least when the fourteenth-century road bands or the Swedes (in 1632) did not plunder the monasteries. From 1621 to 1756, the priory belonged to the Jesuits of Ensisheim, and was then donated by Louis XIV to the royal college of Colmar. During the Revolution, the buildings were sold as national property. During the period when the country was dependent on the Holy Roman Empire until 1648, Froidefontaine was known as Kaltenbrunn.

The church, dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul, has preserved elements that saw the foundation of the priory in the twelfth century. Until the end of the last century has operated an important tile factory located on the road to Morvillars. The Rhone-Rhine canal runs alongside the village and the road to Charmois is equipped with a rotating bridge to cross it.

In 1999, 451 inhabitants were recorded, while the village population was 385 in 1803.
