More Notes for Roger Parke, Jr.:
Although Roger was named in the Coxe suit along with his father, Roger Sr., Andrew, John and Joseph, he did remain on his farm until he died (part of Roger Sr.'s land along Stony Creek). He wanted his daughter Keziah who married James Larison to have the property and he may have discovered a gold nugget on the farm (no more was ever found) but these are both family lore and not proven. The Parke farm remained in the family going to Jacob Stout who married Grace Parke and then to the Ege family.
The farm had a large cemetery where several Parkes as well as Larisons were buried. After the sale of the property in the late 1930s the cemetery was eventually plowed under and there is no trace of it today.
Roger Jr. was on the list of the First Presbyterian Church of Hopewell and helped purchase the land for it in 1731.
Over the years and research with several others, we have determined that Roger was probably 21 in 1704 and had to be baptized in order to inherit his father's farm. Ann and John were first in 1703...next date shown is 1704 when Roger, son of Roger Parke baptized. In 1722, Roger Jr. is shown as paying taxes on the Parke farm. He was also shown as serving on Grand Jury with brother John in 1722. Roger Sr., is named but did not pay taxes in 1722. I believe it showed Roger Sr, as married.
Roger Jr., did not own any property like John and Ann until he inherited his father's property in Hopewell. When John and Ann purchased their land they had to be 21. I believe John had to wait a year indicating that he was probably a year younger than Ann.
Roger Parke (JR) is noted in Hopewell Meeting Minutes in 1741, so he was alive then. The stone in the Parke-Larison cemetery with RP 1755 therefore most likely belongs to Roger Jr.
In 1690 a neighbor, Thomas Robinson (married to a Susannah - wife/widow, with child) in Crosswicks left a legacy to Roger Jr. and Roger Park his father was a trustee of the real estate. Roger Sr. also helped make the inventory of the estate on May 8, 1691 along with Robert Wilson, Marmaduke Horsman and William Hixson.
Appointed overseer of upper road on north side of Stony Brook in 1730 - at Hopewell Town meeting. Roger Jr. may have carried on the "herbal healing" arts practiced by his father but his father was the only one referring to as Dr. Roger Parke. Not much is known about Roger Jr., even when he actually died. He had several children, so he might have had a second marriage. There is no record for ANY marriage of his - none. He definitely did NOT marry a Robinson or Sophia Claes Jans of Rye, New York. That has been PROVEN. Robinson had no daughter for him to marry and Robinson's widow, Susannah married soon after her husband's death according to Quaker records. The Roger Parke who married Sophia Claes Jans was another Roger according to Rye, NY history, whose mother brought him to NY when he was a very young child. He is not related to our Parke line at all.
Roger Jr. served on the Grand Jury with his brother John Parke in 1721. Roger Jr. was named in the Ejetment Suit with his father, Roger Sr., John Sr., Jr. Joseph and Andrew Parke. It is evident that Roger Parke Sr. was able to keep 200 acres of his land which Roger Jr. had paid taxes on in 1722. All reported in "Pioneers of Old Hopewell" by Ralph Ege. p. 201, New Jersey Colonial Documents, West Jersey Records, Liber B., pt.2.
