Earl R. Eichelberger, 88, of Champaign, Illinois, passed away at 6:15 p.m. Friday (March 18, 2016) at Presence Covenant Medical Center, Urbana, Illinois.
He was born on Oct. 10, 1927 to George and Edna (Peters) Eichelberger of Rantoul. Earl was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Paul Eichelberger and Donald Eichelberger.
Earl is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy J. Hansens. They were married on April 5, 1952. He is also survived by his two sons, Jeff (Kim) Eichelberger and David (Karen) Eichelberger; four grandchildren, Kyle (Lindsey) Eichelberger, Regan (Matt) Frazier, Riane (Chris) Pecenka and Elizabeth Eichelberger and two great-grandchildren.
He is survived by seven siblings, Ed (Joyce) Eichelberger, Evelyn Zehr, Virginia Welborn, Dale Eichelberger, Gale Eichelberger, Pat (Jim) Harper, Tom (Pat) Eichelberger and Lila Jean Eichelberger (sister-in-law).
Earl served in the U.S. Army Air Forces from 1944 to 1946. He was an aircraft mechanic stationed in Guam.
He was employed at Illini Electric/Eastern Illini Cooperative for 42 years. After retirement, Earl worked as a ranger at Stonecreek Golf Course.
Earl was an avid fast-pitch softball player. He played for several local teams and was the MVP of the State Tournament in 1964. Earl was inducted into the Illinois Softball Hall of Fame in 2014. He coached Little League and Babe Ruth in Champaign.
He was a member of the Illinois Striders and served as a track official for several years. Earl also enjoyed golf and cheering for his Chicago Cubs.
