Notes - Apparently Christian W. Sutter was the first Mennonite family to settle in the Tofield, Alberta area. They were there before the main migrations from Nebraska in 1910-1913. In the spring of 1908 the Milford Nebraskan newspaper reported, “The Christ Sutter family (consisting of Ella Rose, Clifford and Walter), who had moved to Oregon, were now moving to Alberta, Canada near Beaver Lake.” It was there that on 13 Nov 1913, Clifford Sutter fell through the ice and drowned. In 1909 they lived around Shonts, Alberta, and attended the Salem Church. The family is mainly forgotten at Tofield since they left about 1917, and all the children went with them, except for Clifford who drowned and is buried in the Salem Mennonite cemetery., [2, 4]
