  • Notes
    • Census of 1846 gives Jean’s wife as Barbe Verkler, two daughters Magdelaine 4, and Catherine 1.

The activity of the mill at Gosselming was heavy, since Jean had assistance of two young millers, Joseph Spring and Joseph Engel, and had at his service a servant and a maidservant, Anne Engel.

Jean established the cemetery of Gosselming by giving one of his fields, in order to bury his daughter Catherine, wife of Jean Nafziger. See History of Mennonite Cemetery of Gosselming. Jean was great-great grandfather of Jean-Paul Pelsy, and at one time served as the mayor of the town hall of Gosselming. “One of the Jean Hirschys established a cemetery in Gosselming for his daughter, Catherine, the spouse of Jean Nafzieger, according to an article in Souvenance Anabaptist, 1994.”

The census of 1841 shows 25 Anabaptists at Alzing, but also 3 Protestants and 96 “Israelites.” In 1866 the community of Mennonites counted 32 members--8 males and 24 females.

Translated from the French by Google Translate:
Catherine Hirschy Nafziger, a young wife of 25 who died in childbirth, was the first deceased to be buried there. She was first buried in Gosselming cemetery. But since she was an Anabaptist, it had created stories in the village. A complaint had even been filed and the sub-prefect at the time had summoned the father, Jean Hirschy, miller and peasant in Gosselming, in order to find a solution. As the latter wished to maintain a peaceful relationship with the people of the village, he asked for permission to open his own cemetery on one of his land. After obtaining it, he mounted walls. This is how the cemetery was created. This first tomb is still visible and the Anabaptist Mennonite cemetery of Gosselming continues to accommodate graves. It is also the only one still used in the region….is perfectly maintained by the families of this religious community, which today lives in a triangle made up of the municipalities of Berthelming, Rhodes and Sarrebourg.
