From the book Schrock Farms:
“Sam Schrock Sr. married Helen Sauer and rented a 1/2 section called the Gwinner place 3 miles north of Holdrege. The ground was very sandy. He raised corn and fed cattle and hogs. He was very successful. During the dry years, 1930s, he could raise corn in the sand hills while the corn in the black soil dried up. In 1925 he thought he would retire and move to town and so he built a large lovely 2 story home. He just couldn’t sit around so he bought an old hotel in Ragan and one in Atlanta and used the lumber to build a large building on 4th Ave., the Schrock building, for many businesses. He also built the first filling station in Holdrege on the main highway about 1927. Later, he built a building where the Elks are now and also where the Taste of Country restaurant currently is. He built the first lock plant for frozen meat and built the building where the Cozy Inn restaurant is on 4th.
“Sam I bought the ice plant and delivered ice to the railroad and people would then by his ice. He also bought the livestock sale barn. He was in his 80s at that time. He also built an IGA grocery store on 4th Ave. It no longer exists. During the World War II, when housing was short, he remodeled many old houses and apartments. He also went back to farming when he was in his 60s and 70s. His wife, Helen, died when she was 79 in the 60s and 4 years later he married Margaret. He was in his 80s. She lived for 5 years and died in 1969. He was 99 when he died.” [2]
