Notes - When still at home with his parents and brothers, one day while cutting wood in the woods, Joe accidently chopped off his own thumb or finger with his axe. Because they were quite a distance from home the father wrapped what was left of the finger with his red bandana to stop the bleeding, then put the piece of a finger in his shirt pocket. That evening when the day’s work was finished they went home and washed the wound, put the finger back in place and wrapped it. The finger grew back and I remember seeing his hand when he visited Grandpa as an old man, and I couldn’t tell which finger was cut.
Lived in Michigan. However, some of the family migrated to Defiance, Ohio in the early 1900s. [5]
