DELAVAN - Viola M. Martin, 93, of Delavan passed away peacefully in her sleep at 6:10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, at Pekin Manor in Pekin.
She was born March 25, 1921, in Delavan to Jacob A. and Alma L. Eichelberger Birky, the second of eight children. She married David P. Martin on June 1, 1943, in Delavan. He preceded her in death on March 9, 2000.
Surviving are one son, Arlan (Jean) Martin of Eddington, Maine; two grandchildren, Jodi (Robert) Evenson of Tucson, Ariz., and Ryan (Emily) Martin of Bremerton, Wash.; two great-grandchildren, Ethan Evenson and Molly Martin; one brother, Clayton Birky of Alaska; and two sisters, Bernice Nafziger of Atlanta, Ill., and Janice Baker of Elkhart, Ind.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Ivan, Lester, Glenn and Mervin.
Viola was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed being a homemaker. Her many talents were evident in her home through her cooking, quilting, knitting, sewing and crocheting.
Viola had an unwavering faith in God. She formerly attended the Delavan Baptist Church and was a member of Prairie Bible Church in Delavan. She was a member of Tazewell County Home Extension.
Her funeral service celebrating her life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, at Prairie Bible Church in Delavan. Pastor Dan Larimore will officiate. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., also at the church. Burial will be in the Mennonite Cemetery in Hopedale.
Davis-Oswald Funeral Home in Delavan is handling the arrangements.In lieu of flowers, it was her wish that memorials be made to foreign missions, in care of Prairie Bible Church. [3]
