    • Peter was quite young when he came to America with his parents and grew up in a Mennonite settlement near Groveland in Tazewell Co., Illinois, where he worked as a farmhand. After marriage his family lived on a farm near Pekin, Illinois

      His sons were recipients of walking canes their uncle “Batchelor Joe” made for them from hickory rails split by Abraham Lincoln.
