GIBSON CITY — Dorothy P. Birkey, 93, Gibson City, died at 5:27 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 27, 2011) at Gibson Area Hospital Annex, Gibson City.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Gibson City Bible Church, with the Rev. Paul Thomason officiating. Burial will be in East Bend Memorial Gardens, Fisher. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lamb Funeral Home, Gibson City and for an hour before the service at the church.
Memorials may be made to her church, Great News Radio WGNN or Gibson Area Hospital.
Mrs. Birkey was born Feb. 25, 1918, in White Pigeon, Mich., a daughter of Avery and Lena Ingold Weaver. She married Earl M. Birkey on Sept. 2, 1937. He died May 8, 1996.
Surviving are three sons, Richard (Ruby) Birkey, Hoopeston; Vernon (Shirley) Birkey, Sebring, Fla.; and Robert (Elizabeth) Birkey, Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren, Allan (Robin) Birkey, Brazil, Ind.; Dottie Jean Holomek, Omaha, Neb.; Tim Birkey, Gibson City; and Marc Birkey, Omaha, Neb; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert (Virginia) Weaver, Peoria; and one sister, Darlene Weaver, Peoria.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Dorothy was a charter member of Gibson City Bible Church. She was a licensed practical nurse since 1966 and worked at the Gibson Manor Nursing Home and Gibson Area Hospital Annex. She was a caterer for 20 years, specializing in wedding receptions and wedding cakes. She was past executor of Gibson City Welfare; former director of Cherub Choice of Gibson City Bible Church, singing in church and nursing homes; a member of the Great Praise celebration in Florida; active in jail services and nursing home services; co-owner with her husband in Birkey Sound Recording Services; and a lifetime member of the Illinois Auctioneers Association.
