Notes - “Sam always referred to his mother as, ‘my poor widowed mother’ and would often cry when he mentioned her. She was not actually widowed but instead left her husband in Missouri and came to Phelps County with her five children by immigrant train...she and her two daughters rode in the passenger car and the three boys came in the baggage car!”
The family lived in a dugout (sod house) for about ten years after arriving.
In the family portrait, family myth says the youngest son had to be situated between his parents as they could not agree to sit closer together. [1]
