  Per The Turrentine Family, 4th Edition "The name, Turrentine is an unusual one; however, as research has proven, it is an old one. From whence it is derived is not clearly established. Chronologically, from a pedigree developed by Galiffe the first usage appears around 1300-1354 when a certain Bernando named his son Turrettino. Father and son had not acquired a surname in the modern sense of the word for they were identified as being from de Nozzano - of Nazanno. (Nassano was, and still is a tiny village five or six miles from Lucca, Italy, up in the mountains.) Turrettino's son Jacopi, was known in official records as Jacopi Turrettini, in other words, Jacopi, son of Turrettino...... The name first appears in the English language around 1460 in J. Russell's Boke of Nuture, and it also appears in Wynkyn de Worde's The Boke of Keruynge of 1508. In both of these works the word refers to a certain type of fish "belonging to or abiding in torrente, or swift and violent streams"and is derived from the Italian language. The name first appears in America in the Legislative Journals of the Council of Colonial Virginia, 1710. A Jno Turrentine is listed as a person voting.... [1]
