      GRIDLEY (PNS) - Valentine L. Zehr, 85, died at 10:30 p.m. Sunday at Meadows Mennonite Home, where he lived three weeks. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Salem Evangelical Mennonite Church, the Rev. L.R. Amstutz officiating. Burial will be in Waldo Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 tonight at Froelich Memorial Home, Gridley, and from an hour before the service at the church. He was born Aug. 5, 1895, in Waldo Township, near Flanagan, a son of Valentine and Lizzie Stahly Zehr. He married Wilda Ulrich Dec. 25, 1919 in Waldo Township. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Herbert, 2124 Pierce Avenue, Bloomington; and David, Glendale Heights; a daughter, Ellen Streid, Gridley; a brother, Stephen, and two sisters, Katie Ulrich and Lizzie Zehr, all at Meadows Mennonite Home; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A brother and three sisters preceded him in death. He was a member of Salem Evangelical Mennonite Church. [2]

      Herbert L. Zehr, 93, of Normal, was welcomed at the gates of heaven by his life-long love, Eleanor. Herb died at 11:45 a.m. Friday (Dec. 7, 2018) at the McLean County Nursing Home, Normal.
      His funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Park United Methodist Church, Bloomington. Rev. Keith Ferguson will officiate. Burial will be Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Park United Methodist Church, Bloomington.
      The family suggests memorials be made to Park United Methodist Church, Bloomington.

      Arrangements are being handled by Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington.
      Herb was born July 4, 1925 in Gridley, the son of Valentine and Wilda Ulrich Zehr. He married Eleanor Bomgarden, his high school sweetheart, after his return from serving in the Army during World War II on Jan. 26, 1946 in Chenoa. They spent 60 years loving each other and are now reunited in perfect peace. She died June 4, 2013.
      Surviving is his son, Phillip D. (Gloria) Zehr, Bloomington; two grandchildren, Jessica (Chris) Soucek, Normal, and Melissa Zehr, Tampa, Fla.; four great-grandchildren, Jalynne Zehr, Tampa, Fla., Peyton Zehr, Bloomington, Connor Soucek, Normal, and Caden Soucek, Normal; one sister, Ellen Streid, Gridley; one brother, David (Jackie) Zehr, Sugar Grove; and one sister in-law, Ruby Vaughn, Mansfield.
      Herb is preceded in death by his parents.
      Herb worked for Shield's Jewelry, Bloomington, for 42 years and retired as manager.

      He enjoyed camping and had done volunteer work for the Humane Society of Central Illinois. Herbert served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
      He was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather and is half of the sweetest love story ever told.
      The family would like to thank the amazing staff at McLean County Nursing Home and OSF Hospice for their care and compassion.
