Normal – Gerald “Dean” Augsburger, 98 of Normal passed away at 1 AM on Thursday October 3, 2019 at his residence.

There will be a graveside service later at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL. Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home in Bloomington is assisting the family with arrangements.

Dean was born to Elmer and Mabel Yordy Augsburger in Flanagan on September 16, 1921. He married Mary Etta Campbell on May 21, 1949 in Pontiac. She preceded him in death on January 24, 2014.

He is survived by two children, Jeffrey (Barbara) Augsburger of Normal, and Dennis Augsburger of Champaign. Also, two grandchildren, Brad (Amy Harrison) Augsburger of Springfield, and Laurel (Aaron) Davis of Normal. Three of his siblings also survive, Delbert and Donald Augsburger, and Florence Bryant.

Dean served our country during World War II in the United States Army in Europe and spent three consecutive birthdays far from home. At wars end he was stationed near his family’s ancestral home in Germany.

He owned his own plumbing business in Flanagan until the early 1970s when he moved to Bloomington-Normal and partnered with his brother Joseph at Augsburger Plumbing. Dean continued to work in the plumbing trade until his late 80s. He loved to work hard and it paid off with a long, active life.

His outside interests included golf and following the Chicago Bears. He doted on his grandchildren and spent countless hours with them up until his death. He was proud to be an American and flew our flag wherever he lived.

Dean was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Normal and several fraternal and service organizations during his years in Flanagan.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Youth Group at First United Methodist Church. [2]
