      Benson– Merlyn E. Augsburger, 99, of Eureka, IL formerly of Benson, IL passed away at 10:05p.m. on Sunday, September 4, 2016 at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Eureka.

      He was born on January 12, 1917 in Flanagan, IL a son of Elmer and Mabel Yordy Augsburger. He married Edna M. Schirer on June 27, 1947 in Bloomington, IL. She passed away on December 10, 1992.

      Survivors include one daughter, Janet Spera of Normal, IL; three sons, Bruce (Jan M.) Augsburger of Eureka; Loren Augsburger of Gridley; Ellis(Jan) Augsburger of Benson; ten grandchildren, Cory(Muna) Spera, Cassie(Josh) Beal, Kristin Spera(fiancé Marty), Hailee(Jon) Ireland, Kelly(Dale) Karr, Matthew Augsburger, Andrew(Brittany) Augsburger, Elisha(Bobby) Sherman, April(Odie) Guzman, Austin Augsburger;11 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Dean Augsburger of Bloomington; Delbert Augsburger of Arizona; Donald Augsburger of Flanagan; one sister, Florence Bryant of Florida.

      He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Joseph and Clayton, three sisters, Verna Heiser, Mardelle Kenagy, Darlene Limburg, two infant sisters and son-in-law, Bill Spera.

      Merlyn farmed in the Roanoke/Benson area most of his life where he raised soy beans, corn and Charolais cattle.

      He served his country in the United States Army during WWII in the 8th Calvary.
      He was a member of the Eureka Church of Christ. Merlyn was a 4H leader for many years.

      He was an avid pool player and loved playing games with his children and grandchildren. Anyone who knew Merlyn knew he was a quiet man outwardly but an extraordinarily generous and loving man inwardly. His smile combined with the twinkle in his eyes melted his grandchildren’s hearts. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

      Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Friday, September 9, 2016 at Knapp-Johnson-Harris Funeral Home in Roanoke. Minister Gary Cline will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5-7p.m. on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Roanoke Township Cemetery where military rites will be accorded at the grave.
