President Ulysses Grant was seeking better trade with what was then known as the Sandwich Islands. He decided to do things up big. He, and his wife, Julia, staged a “brilliant beyond all precedent” meal for David Kalakaua, the last king of Hawaii. This became the first “state dinner” by a president in Washington. The original feast went on for some 30 courses. Julia Grant sat by the king, the president opposite. [2]
