Emil’s great, great, great grandfather (Han’s father) was Mathias Hirschi who was baptized July 5, 1668 at Trub, Ct. Bern, Switzerland.Matthias married Anna Nyffenegger on May 7, 1697 in Trub.Anna was born about 1676 in Hutwill, Bern, Switzerland. They had four children one of which was Hans Hirschi.

Emil’s great, great, great, great grandfather (Mathias’s father) was Christian Hirschi of Schangnau, Switzerland. He was born about 1635 in Schangnau, Ct. Bern, Switzerland. He became a registered citizen of Trub in 1685.Christian married Anna Zurcher (Zuercher or Gruercher) on November 16, 1657 in Trub, Switzerland.Anna was born in 1634 in Ct. Bern, Switzerland. She was the daughter of Anthoni Zuercher and Magdalen Haldimann.Anthoni was born 1596 in Trub, Bern, Switzerland. He was the son of Hans Zuercher born 1578 in Trub.Hans Zuercher married Magdalena Althaus in about 1598 in Trub.Magdalena was born about 1579 in Trub.Anthoni married Magdalen Haldimann in 1625 in Trub.Magdalen was born 1605 in Trub.Hans Zuercher was the son of Ulrich Zuercher born about 1548 in Trub and married to Anna Brand in about 1577 in Trub. Anna was born about 1548 in Trub.Christian and Anna had seven children one of them being Mathias Hirschi.Christian died in Trub, Ct. Bern, Switzerland. His religion was Reformed.Tradition as told by a Hirschy descendant is that when the Reformation began, the Hirschy family fled to higher hills near the Alps. The family lived in a home under a bluff and no rain nor snow fell on the roof.Such a home is the Hohlenflüh, not far from the Alps.

Note the name changed from Hirschi to Hirschy about 1820 when the three French cantons were taken into the Confederacy. The “Y” at the end of the name designated we are French-Swiss.Hirschey was the American spelling, started by Emil.

The location in Switzerland of our forefathers as far back as Richard Hirschey’s information contains begins in the village of Schangnau. In 1685 they moved to a neighboring village of Trub.Four of Hans Hirschi’s children were born in Courtelary, Switzerland and nine were born in La Chaux de Fonds. The Hirschi family has been in this area for at least 263 years.Information on the Hirschi extended family is on a sheet supplied by Isaak Hirschi in 1850.It is in the Zivilstandamt in Trub, Ct. Bern, Switzerland.
