FISHER — Betty L. Hinton, 73, of Fisher, went to be with the Lord on Monday afternoon (July 6, 2015) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
She was born July 31, 1941, in Cook County, a daughter of Chester J. and Ethel Springer Sommer. She married Merold L. Hinton on June 3, 1960, in Fisher. He survives.
Also surviving are four children, Sandi (Ken) Elliott, Fisher; Rebecca (Tom) Maier, Bellflower; Leon Hinton, Rantoul; and Joyce (Rick) Coffey, Fisher; a sister, Sharon (John) Leikvoll, Mahomet; 13 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Shawn Michael Wiese.
Betty was a homemaker, raising her four children and helping her husband farm in the Fisher area. She was a member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church. where she was a chairman of the Pastor Parish Committee and donated funding for the church chair lift.
She was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award in 1974 from the state of Illinois and from Champaign County in 1986. She volunteered on the Crisis Line for 20 years.
She volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program, beginning by making meals for people in her own kitchen. She was actively involved in the building of Fisher Grade School.
Betty loved her horses, especially Arabians, which she kept at the family home as well as boarding for others. She worked with the University of Illinois veterinary students in educational studies.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Shiloh United Methodist Church, rural Mahomet. The Rev. Louella Pence will officiate. Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery, rural Mahomet.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Lux Memorial Chapel, 1551 E. Grove Ave., Rantoul.
Memorials may be made to the Shiloh Methodist Church Building Fund.
