    Saltzman, Barbara, daughter of Joseph and Christina (Eicher) Stalter, was born Feb. 15, 1868, near Gridley, ill.; passed away at her home in Flanagan, Ill., May 7, 1954, after a lingering illness of more than three years; aged 87 y. 2 m. 22 d. On Nov. 10, 1887, she was united in marriage with Peter Saltzman, who preceded her in death Nov. 10, 1921. To this union were born 7 children, 2 of whom preceded her death in infancy. The following survive (Mrs. Roy Hartzler, Minonk, Ill.; Clara, at home; Mrs. Will Yordy, and Mrs. Noah Eigsti, of Flanagan; and Raymond, of Minonk). Besides her children, she leaves 18 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one brother (John Stalter, of Gridley). She became a member of the Waldo Mennonite Church in her youth, remaining a faithful member through life and having been a member of this church for about seventy years. Funeral services were held at the Waldo Mennonite Church in charge of J. D. Hartzler, assisted by E. J. Stalter. Interment was made in the Waldo Cemetery.

    "On the 1st of September 1893, near Gridley, in Livingston Co., Ill., of stomach trouble and dysentery, Joseph Stalter, aged 62 years, 5 months. He suffered considerably during the last two weeks, but was very patient. His wife preceded him about 20 years, leaving him with four children whom he reared with care, and who now survive him. He was universally loved and respected and was a faithful brother in the Old Amish branch of the Mennonite denomination. Buried on the 3rd at which time the largest funeral assembled that was ever in the meeting-house of that place. Funeral services by D. Orendorff, J. Egly, Jos. Ackerman, John Schmitt and others."

    Feb. 25th, in Livingston Co., Ill., CHRISTINA STALTER, wife of Joseph Stalter, aged 32 years, and 11 months. The 28th her remains were laid in the grave, in the presence of a large concourse of relatives and friends. She was prepared to leave the world. A few hours before she died, she said she could not wait much longer, and at five o’clock she must depart, at which time she was released. She leaves a husband and four children to mourn their loss. Funeral services by Christian Schlagel, Joseph Gascho, and John P. Smith.

    Joseph and his brother John received the Kirschbacherhof 4 Mar 1835. The inventory list still exists. The two brothers fell into debt and they migrated in 1849 to America. Joseph then went to America some time after the death of his wife in 1877.

    “They took with them sufficent funds to buy land on the recently opened prairies of central Illinois, and in 1855 Josef Jr. became a minister of the newly formed Rock Creek Amish congregation there.”

    Notes:

    Joseph made experiments with threshing machines powered by water. After his sons fell into debt, Joseph had to sell his farm Stuppacherhof (previously owned by Jakob Dettweiler) to pay the debt of his sons. He was a broken man and died in 1851.

    Tenant on Kirschbacherhof and Monbijou, preacher of the Zweibrücken congregation. Lived on Ottenweierhof in 1822.

    The Kirschbacher Hof was reconstructed and after 1822 was again leased to the Stalters who were still living in the Zweibrücken region. Joseph Stalter was for a time a leaseholder on the Kirschbacher Hof. For a time he was owner of an estate Stubbach Hof. In 1835 he moved to the “Montbijou” estate and gave the lease of the Kirschbacher Hof to both of his sons, Joseph and Johannes.

    Joseph Stalter was a respected preacher of the Amish congregation.,
