    “The Sommer family is identified with Sommerhof, a farm that was abandoned when the last of the extended family came to America in 1834. It was located outside Neuviller (later Neuviller-la-Roche), at the Croix-Rouge meeting of the Rothaine Valley (coming from the western Rothau direction) and the Chergoutte Valley (coming from the eastern Barr direction) in the le Ban de la Roche area of Lower Alsace. This location was so deeply embedded in woods that 19th-century travelers were afraid to pass at night.
