    Notes:

Suttor/Sutor/Sutter/Suter is a Mennonite family name with Swiss origins. More than likely this surname is derived from the Latin expression for a shoemaker-- sutor.

“Before it began to be drained, the Donaumoos (Danube marsh) was the largest bog in Southern Germany. In 1790 the Bavarian elector Charles Theodor began to invite Mennonites to settle in the inhospitable 120-square-mile area area, offering incentives for recaimation and cultivation. In 1802 over 120 Mennonite families were permitted to settle there, and many of the families remained until the '48er wave of emigration. Entries for Mennonite families in the Donaumoos such as Sutter, Oesch, and Ingold can also be found in Catholic records at Karlskron.”

Johannes Sutor and three of his children were born at Hellmansburg. Many family members are buried there also. The largest of the markers in the cemetery reads:

Here rest the bones (remains) of the deceased Christian Sutterich family.
Father, Mother, Wife, Children. God has received (accepted) them so he
will receive (accept) me too. Before God's face we will meet (see each other) again.
Johannes Sutter, the ancestor (forefather) born 1765, died June 1, 1844
left 2 sons and 2 daughters and 33 grandchildren. Of the Mennonite religion.

    Birth:
“Johannes Suttor was born circa 1764. A report for the birth of one of his children gives his birthplace. The document – written by a municipal clerk at Karlskron, 7 miles south of Ingolstadt – stated that he was born on the 'Lindenbrunnerhof bei Annweiler.' This may have been either of two locations. The first possibility is the LindeLbrunnerhof farm between Darstein and Münchweiler am Klingbach, about 4 miles from Annweiler. However, there is a good case to be made for the LindeNbrunnerhof farm at Heltersberg, only a few miles from Lemberg, Pirmasens, and Münchweiler an der Rodalbe but 18 miles from Annweiler. One strong clue seems to point to the Lindenbrunnerhof: an Ingold family that lived there also lived with them in other locations, intermarried with the Sutters, and now has descendants in Tazewell County.”

    Residence:
    at the Rhine River

    Residence:
at the time of Johannes’ and Barbara’s birth

    Residence:
    Lindelbrunnerhof, 4 mi. from Annweiler

    Residence:
Former Cistercian monastery (tenant, along with Friedrich Hage). This estate had belonged to a Catholic abbey before it was secularized in 1803. During the time the Sutters lived there the grounds were used to grow food for the Bavarian army; after 1811 it was used to house displaced Franciscans, then converted into a prison.

    Residence:
Forsthof, a Jesuit estate (with Friedrich Hage). In this time frame about 50 Mennonite families were given formerly Catholic properties between Neuberg and Ingolstadt, as the government encouraged cultivation of the Danube Marsh.
