    Rev. Michael Zehr (b. Abt. September 29, 1789, d. February 27, 1880)
Michael Zehr (son of Michael Zehr and Anna Marie Kohler)344, 345 was born Abt. September 29, 1789 in Alsace-Lorraine, France346, and died February 27, 1880 in Croghan, NY346. He married Anna Jantzi on October 09, 1811 in Gros-Rederiching, France347, daughter of Christian Jantzi and Anna Farny.

    Notes for Michael Zehr:

In 1525, to escape persecution, there began a large movement of Anabaptists (Mennonites) from Bern, Switzerland to Alsace-Lorriane (a German speaking province in what is now France). Our Zehr ancestors were among them (probably in the early 1600's). Born on or about 9-29-1789 was Michael Zehr, who later married Anna Jantzi. They had nine children.

Agent of Comte LeRay de Chamont, John Keiffer returned to his European homeland in a quest for colonist to settle the lands of Chamont in New York. Michael was one of many persuaded. In 1833 he migrated to America with his entire family. He wanted to escape the military service laws which went against his Mennonite beliefs and to take advantage of the opportunity to own his own land. Their ship, The Barque Statera, arrived at New York City in June. From there it is likely the family went by boat up the Hudson river and the Eire Canal to Utica. On arriving at Utica, they were out of money and food so the eldest two Michael and Christian (ages 18 and 20) remained behind in search of work in exchange for money and food. Their father and mother pushed on afoot with the rest of the family. The first night they spent in an old barn near Boonville and the next day they completed their journey walking to French Settlement (now Croghan).

Michael Zehr, built a cabin on what is now known as the William J. Zehr farm in the northern part of the Village of Croghan. The cabin stood where now a cherry tree grows in the field. Later farm buildings were added also made of logs. Their last child was born here the winter of 1838.

Michael became an ordained minister of the Amish community and in 1848 a Bishop. Their meetings were held in the homes of members. Rev. Michael Zehr died at the age of 90 and is buried in a small cemetery, located on now the Ira J. and Jim Zehr farm.

In 1840 Michael's second son, Christian, married Anna Beller (born 1820 Valmar, France).
