    Notes:

This family picked up the surname Gerard in occasional use. We suspect it began with the birth of daughter Christine, the first child born in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle. The clerk at Baccarat called both father André and his witness Joseph ‘Gérard.’ While André signed with an ‘x’, indicating he was illiterate, Joseph very clearly signed ‘Joseph Schrag.’

This mixup of Gerard for Schrag would continue until April 11, 1863, when Christophe Schrag (a son of André’s brother Christian/Christophe) made a grievance at a public meeting of the civil tribunal in District 2 of the department of Meuse. He explained that the persistent error could only be explained by poor pronunciation of the word Gerard. This resulted in a lengthy remark inserted in the civil records of Chassey, detailing all the family events that had been misidentified because of it.

    Notes:

Andreas’ descendants migrated to America 1843, 1855.

Hermann Guth says, “Andréas probably belongs here.” However, his birth date doesn’t seem to fit. But there is probably a connection, since Jean Hirgie was a witness to Anna’s marriage and listed as a cousin.

After Suzanne Bachman died, Andréas moved to Lorraine in France and married Suzanne Hirchi before 1781. Lived in Oron (F 57528) near Chateau-Salins in 1781 and in
1797 in Grostenquin near Linstroff. Andreas was named as an “anne Baptiste” miller at the mill of Tenchel in the birth document of son Christian. The mother of Christian is named as Susan Hirche.

Andréas later settled in Vergaville (F 57708) near Dieuze, where he was living with son Andréas at the time of his death in 1809. He was miller at the Tenchel in Lorraine.

In 1805, André’ signed the birth record of his granddaughter, Catherine Schrag, daughter of son André’ and Anne Pelsey.

Translation of death document by Neil Ann Stuckey Levine:
    2) Death of André Schrag, widower, 60.  On June 13, 1809, 7 p.m., ... in Vergaville, canton of Dieuze, arrondissement of Château-Salins, department of Meurthe [department of Moselle today], appeared André Schrag, 30, and Joseph Reisinger, 56, both millers, and Gabriel Pierre, 30, leather worker [no French dictionary I have here at home has an entry for "chamoiseur"], all three living in Vergaville, the first a son and the other two acquaintances of André Schrag, fellow miller ["compagnon" can also mean apprentice, but that would hardly apply to the deceased at 60], living in Vergaville, and they have declared that today, at 4 p.m., the said André Schrag, 60, native of Deux-Ponts (Mont-Tonnere) [the short-lived French department of Mont-Tonnere, encompassing Zweibrücken, i.e., Deux-Ponts, in the Palatinate, dates to Napoleon's tremendous expansion of greater France], widow in his second marriage of Suzanne Hergë [Hirschi], died at the home of the first declarer [his like-named son].  And the declarers signed the present death document with me, after it had been read aloud to them, with the exception of André Schrag, son of the deceased, who declared that he does not know how to write or to sign his name.

André’s descendants are compiled in the voluminous first edition of “Who’s Who in The Schrock Family”, and printed in February 2001 by Kevin J. Willems.
