    Mother of 13 children total, 12 of whom were still living in 1900. Children were George, John, Fannie, Mary, Magdalene, Christian, Fred, Emil, Charles, Edward, Samuel (Simon) and Earnest.

    Mrs. Kauffold Dead

    Mrs. Magdalena Kauffold, 82, died Tuesday afternoon at a local hospital from the effects of injuries suffered in a fall at the home of a son, Ernest C. Jackson, 3325 Larimore avenue.

    Born in Bavaria, she came to America in 1862, married four years later and homesteaded near Alliance in 1885. She came to Omaha 35 years ago, making her home with her son since her husband’s death in 1905.

    Mrs. Kauffold is survived by five sons, Ernest, Sam P., Edward R., and Chris A., of Omaha, and Fred W., of Los Angeles; three daughters, Mrs. M.L. Henning and Mrs. E.F. Jackson of Omaha and Mrs. Mary Creutz of Wausa, Neb.; 18 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

    Funeral services will be Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock from Crosby’s Chapel. Six grandchildren will be pallbearers. Burial will be in Forest Lawn cemetery.

    BURKY - On the 1st of March, in Woodford county, Ill., of cancer in the stomach and lung fever, Bro. Jacob Burky, aged about 72 years. He was buried on the 3d. Services by Chr. Risser, John P. Schmidt and Peter Hockstetler, from 1 Cor. 15 and John 5:24. The deceased suffered much pain for several years, but he bore it all patiently.

    "Veronica Berkey was born Aug. 10, 1819, died near Milford, Neb., Feb. 24, 1901, aged 81 years, 6 months and 14 days. She was the widow of Jacob Berkey and leaves three sons and one daughter, thirty grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren to mourn her departure. She was a beloved sister in the Amish Mennonite Church, and an affectionate mother. She lived with her youngest son, John, and was tenderly cared for during her illness of over four weeks. Buried in the Fairview cemetery. Funeral services by Joseph Schlegel in German, from 2 Cor. 5:1 and in English by N.E. Roth, from John 11:25. A large concourse of people gathered on this occasion, in token of the respect and esteem in which she was held. Peace to her ashes. D.B."

    Valentine, father of thirteen children, all of whom emigrated to America, although not all at the same time, lived in Gern, Bavaria, when his children were born. The year after his wife died, Valentine, with some of his family came to America. He left Gern near Munich, Bavaria with five children, and with 10,000 fl., one of the larger amounts taken out of the country--much more than most immigrants. His brother Christian took the same amount. Valentine was of the "Little Red" Birky's. The family’s emigration is documented in Friedrich Blendinger’s material (the emigration to North America from the governmental district Upper Bavaria in the years 1846-1852, in: ZBLG (magazine for Bavarian national history) 27 (1964), p. 431-487.
