Mennonite Women: A Story of God's Faithfulness

"This mother endured many hardships and remained faithful. After eight years of happy marriage she suddenly became a widow with three sons to raise in a new community. On the advice of men in her congregation, she married a man who proved to be an alcoholic and emotionally disturbed. She cared for a mentally retarded son and a senile mother. She lost a son in the great World War I flu epidemic....When the strong, handsome Joseph Heiser who lived nearby asked her to marry him, twenty-year-old Barbara gladly accepted.....A year after her own marriage Barbara's twin sister married Joseph Heiser's brother Jacob. Sisters married to brothers!" ....
"Following her husband's untimely death, Barbara was left a widow, in a new community, with three sons to bring up alone, and she had a farm to manage. She took little Aaron into her arms and, from that day on, called him Joseph, after his father."

Barbara and her sister, Elizabeth, were twins.
Later Barbara married Andrew Eyer, and they had two sons, William (b.8 Feb 1895) and Daniel (b. 1899).

“On December 11, 1881, Joseph Hieser, the fifth son of Jacob and Catherine Wagler Hieser, married Barbara Bachman, one of the John Bachman’s twins. They made their first home in Tazewell County in the Deer Creek area. To this union were born three sons: John Emil, Amos Albert, and Joseph Aaron.

“In the spring of 1889 Joseph and Barbara Hieser decided to join others and moved their family to Champaign County, Illinois. At this time the children were yet small, John being 6 years old, Amos 4, and Joseph 7 months. Joseph’s brother, Jacob Hieser and brother-in-law Peter Zehr, were already living in the East Bend community. Peter Zehr was the first minister and bishop of the new East Bend church. Joseph and Barbara Hieser made this move on March 4, 1889. He bought the land that lay to the north side of his brother Jacob’s property.

“As there was no dwelling on the property Joseph and his family purchased, they lived temporarily in a small house on his brother Jacob’s farm, until such a time as he could get their own home built. He possibly had already been making plans to build, when his brother-in-law Peter Zehr, who had purchased hay, needed help to get it into the mow. Joseph, a strong robust man, helped pitch the hay into the barn. While working he suddenly became ill, making it necessary to acquire a doctor. The doctor left some medicine without having come to an exact diagnosis. Joseph passed away on March 27, 1889, at the age of 29 years and 4 months, three weeks after moving to Champaign County. It was later determined that death was due to an apomanary(?) hemorrhage (ruptured lung artery). This caused internal bleeding, a result of over exertion.

“This surely must have been disheartening to Barbara Heiser, who was left with her three small sons; John, Amos and Joseph. This left her with a great responsibility and she was now faced with many hardships, the children’s diseases, but at all times she trusted in the Lord to see her through. As there was a new home to build and hired help for farming the purchased ground, she met with many hard financial situation.

“For about five years Andrew Eyer, a native of Germany, farmed for Barbara. On June 17, 1894, Barbara married Andrew. To them were born two sons, William and Daniel. About nine years after their marriage, Andrew found himself battling with a mental disability. He was taken to Kankakee State Hospital, Kankakee, IL, where he spent the next seven years. About three weeks before his death, October 8, 1910, he was brought home. Once again Barbara was left without a husband. She now had five sons.

    Notes:

Suttor/Sutor/Sutter/Suter is a Mennonite family name with Swiss origins. More than likely this surname is derived from the Latin expression for a shoemaker-- sutor.

“Before it began to be drained, the Donaumoos (Danube marsh) was the largest bog in Southern Germany. In 1790 the Bavarian elector Charles Theodor began to invite Mennonites to settle in the inhospitable 120-square-mile area area, offering incentives for recaimation and cultivation. In 1802 over 120 Mennonite families were permitted to settle there, and many of the families remained until the '48er wave of emigration. Entries for Mennonite families in the Donaumoos such as Sutter, Oesch, and Ingold can also be found in Catholic records at Karlskron.”

Johannes Sutor and three of his children were born at Hellmansburg. Many family members are buried there also. The largest of the markers in the cemetery reads:

Here rest the bones (remains) of the deceased Christian Sutterich family.
Father, Mother, Wife, Children. God has received (accepted) them so he
will receive (accept) me too. Before God's face we will meet (see each other) again.
Johannes Sutter, the ancestor (forefather) born 1765, died June 1, 1844
left 2 sons and 2 daughters and 33 grandchildren. Of the Mennonite religion.

    Birth:
“Johannes Suttor was born circa 1764. A report for the birth of one of his children gives his birthplace. The document – written by a municipal clerk at Karlskron, 7 miles south of Ingolstadt – stated that he was born on the 'Lindenbrunnerhof bei Annweiler.' This may have been either of two locations. The first possibility is the LindeLbrunnerhof farm between Darstein and Münchweiler am Klingbach, about 4 miles from Annweiler. However, there is a good case to be made for the LindeNbrunnerhof farm at Heltersberg, only a few miles from Lemberg, Pirmasens, and Münchweiler an der Rodalbe but 18 miles from Annweiler. One strong clue seems to point to the Lindenbrunnerhof: an Ingold family that lived there also lived with them in other locations, intermarried with the Sutters, and now has descendants in Tazewell County.”

    Notes:

Oesch Swiss roots begin in Oberlangenegg, a district far in the valley beyond Schwarzenegg. Here lived Taufer named Oesch. The Steffisburg, Switzerland records speak of Uli Osch, "The exiled disobedient Anabaptist," whose son Christian was baptized in 1684. It is easy to conclude that the family had to flee to the hills. This family later moved on to Alsace and the Palatinate and produced a large progeny of Amish Mennonites.

It was in connection with the resettlement of Amish tenants from the Alsace and the Palatinate to Bavaria, encouraged by the Elector Max (the later King Max I. Joseph of Bavaria) that Christian Oesch (1755) and his wife, Katharina Burki, and seven children immigrated to Hanfeld near Starnberg about 1803.

Christian and his family came from Saarbuckenheim (Sarre-Union in French) in the "crooked Alsace" and was born on the Waderhof (beo Diemeringen in Unterelsass, 1803 nach Hanfeld) near Lorenzen about 1755. At Hanfeld, Christian owned the "zum Streicher" estate in this purely-Catholic village south of Munich. The native population was not friendly to these new Mennonite settlers.

They refused to permit any Mennonite burials in their cemetery and forced the Mennonites to bury their dead in a meadow instead. The local Catholic priest even insisted upon the Mennonites paying him for his usual fee when someone died. Christian, as well as his son, Andréas, refused to make the payment after Christian's wife, Katharina's, death. As a result, the priest informed the government and was told that he could sue for the fee at court. The Munich State Archives reports that apparently no action was taken. The old Mennonite cemetery at Hanfeld no longer exists today.

  4. 15.  Katharina Burki was born in 1764 in Lorentzen, Bas-Rhin, FR; died on 6 Mar 1829 in Hanfeld, Bavaria, GR; was buried in Mar 1829 in Hanfeld, Bavaria, GR.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Farmer’s daughter
    • Religion: Mennonite

    Notes:

Who was Katharina/Catherine Bürki, who married Christian Oesch/Christian N. Oesch, and died at Hanfeld March 6, 1829?  We could make two reasonable guesses, but the information to verify them is lacking.  She may have been a sister to Christian 'Christel' Bürcky/Bircki ('Big Birkeys'), who was born circa 1760; this would make sense because of Christel's link to the Gentersberg estate (and presumably to the nearby Dorsterhof estate) where Oesches farmed.  Or, she may have been a sister to Johannes Birky or Bircki ('Little Red Birkys'), who was born circa 1748.  This would make sense because his son Andreas/André/Andrew owned property at Söcking, which is now part of Hanfeld.

According to Rudolf Ingold and Hermann Guth, the Mennonite tenants at Hanfeld fell into a disagreement with local Catholic clerics, and were obliged to bury their dead in a meadow. When Katharina/Catherine Bürki died in 1829, one priest asked for a death fee. Christian refused, and the priest complained to the local administration. He was told that he could take the matter to court, but no action was taken.
