    A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Mennonite Home Chapel, Albany, Ore.    
    Memorials may be given to The Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital Foundation or The Mennonite Education Agency/La Junta Mennonite Nursing Scholarship Fund, sent in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St., Lebanon, OR 97355.
    Ms. Springer was born Oct. 3, 1921, in Minier, daughter of Ben and Clara Hieser Springer. 
    She graduated from the La Junta Mennonite School of Nursing with a registered nursing degree in 1943. After graduation she worked in La Junta for several years then moved to Lebanon, Ore., in 1960. In Lebanon, Lorene worked at Lebanon Community Hospital and later as an office nurse.
    She enjoyed traveling and spending time at the coast with friends and relatives and volunteering.
    After retirement, she moved to the Mennonite Village.
    She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Albany.
    Lorene was preceded in death by her three sisters, Elsie Bachman, Ina Bachman and Loretta Leatherman; three brothers, Howard, Glenn and Nelson Springer; and one nephew.
    She is survived by six nephews and seven nieces.

    SPRINGER, BEN, son of Joseph and Barbara (Naffziger) Springer, was born near Hopedale, Ill., Aug. 23, 1881; died at Newton, Kan., Nov. 25, 1968; aged 87 y. 3 m. 2 d. On Feb. 27, 1905, he was married to Clara Heiser, who died Aug. 12, 1968. In 1921 he was ordained to the ministry and served the Hopedale Church. He also served for several years on the executive committee of the district Sunday school conference. Surviving are 7 children (Howard, Elsie--Mrs. Leland Bachman, Ina, Glenn, Nelson, Lorene, and Loretta--Mrs. Paul Leatherman, 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Hopedale Church, where funeral services were held Nov. 29, with Ivan Kauffmann, John Troyer, and Howard Wittrig officiating.

In 1905, she was married to Ben Springer, who survives. Also surviving are 4 daughters (Mrs. Elsie Bachman, Ina Springer, Lorene Springer, and Mrs. Loretta Leatherman), 3 sons (Howard B., Glenn W., and Nelson P.), 14 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 4 sisters (Mrs. Chris Birky, Mrs. Emma Lippith, Mina, and Mrs. William Glaser), and 2 brothers (William and Roy).     He leaves one brother and three sisters, his wife, eight children and 15 grandchildren. 

    For many years he proclaimed the gospel to a dying world. Thus another one of Christ's faithful ones has gone to his reward.

    "Albrecht.--Barbara Nafziger was born in Rheinbayern, Germany on Aug. 28, 1851; died at her late home in Champaign, Ill., April 9, 1923; aged 71 y. 7 m. 12 d. In 1870 she came to America with her parents, living with them near Bloomington, Ill., for four years, when she was married to John Albrecht of near Flanagan, Ill. This happy marriage terminated when her husband died in Feb., 1900, but by her courage and faith in God she carried on the family responsibilities. Her life was ever guided by the prayer that she might be given the ability to see the right and have the strength to follow it. For several years she made her home in Flanagan. The last ten years were spent in Champaign, where she moved for the purpose of educating her two younger sons. It was said that she was ever ready to help a good cause along by giving of her means. She leaves 4 sons and 3 daughters: Mrs. Joseph Ingold, Mrs. P. L. Guth, Mrs. E. J. Gable, P. D., and S. A., of Flanagan, Ill.; W. A., of Columbiana, Mo.; and D. A. of Champaign, Ill. One daughter, Mrs. S. J. Sutter of Flanagan, preceded her to the great beyond. A number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, besides many friends also survive. Short services were held at her home in Champaign, April 10, after which her remains were brought to the home of her son S. A., at The Homestead, where services were held April 12 by D. W. Slagel (I Pet. 1:3-25) and at the Waldo Church by Bros. J. D. Hartzler (Acts 9:36-42) and C. F. Derstine (Acts 13:36 and Heb. 11:16). Many friends and relatives had assembled. Interment in the Waldo cemetery."

    Hieser.--Christian, son of Joseph and Barbara Schrock Hieser was born near Pekin, Ill., Oct. 19, 1851, died at his home at Minier, Ill., Feb. 17, 1938. He was married to Magdalena Sutler Feb. 6, 1876, who with 11 children, 22 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, survive. The children are John of Hopedale; Mrs. Clara Springer, Mrs. Alma Holmes, William Hieser, and Mrs. Estelle Glaser of Minier; Mrs. Mary Birky of Delavan; Harry of Bloomington; Roy of Towanda; Mrs. Anna Quigg of Ocean Park, Calif.; Mrs. Emma Lippitt and Miss Mena Hieser of Denver, Colo. Two children (Leah Hieser and Mrs. Barbara Springer) preceded him in death. Two sisters (Mrs. Jacob Naffziger and Miss Mary Hieser of Tremont) also survive. Funeral services were held at the Hopedale Mennonite Church, of which he was a member. Services were conducted by Bro. Simon Litwiller, assisted by Bro. Ernest Hostetler.


    Reared in Elm Grove Township, educated in Railroad School. At age 24 he moved to Little Mackinaw Township. The couple lived in Kansas for a year, but returned to IL (Minier) in 1896.


    A biography of Christian published in George Smith's History of Illinois and Her People in 1927 yielded much of the information on his father.

    HIESER - On the 8th of November, 1892, near Pekin, Tazewell Co., Ill., of the infirmities of old age and other complaints, Bro. Joseph Hieser, aged 74 years, 8 months and 8 days. He leaves an aged widow, three sons and four daughters to mourn his death. He begged his family not to weep for him, for he said he was going home to Jesus. His remains were laid to rest at Pleasant Grove on the 10th. Funeral services by David Augsburger of Washington, Pre. King of Mackinaw, P. Ropp of Pekin, and J. Burckey of Tiskilwa.

    “Joseph went to Dillon in 1848 to work laying railroad tracks. He labored on the rails to Peoria until 1850, but came away with little savings.

    Following his arrival in Tazewell County, Joseph Hieser worked [in 1850] on the first railroad built into Peoria, and on account of dishonesty he was never paid for his labor. Until his marriage the home of Joseph Hieser was cared for by his mother, who had subsequently joined her son. She is now deceased and lies in the cemetery of Elm Grove Township.”

    SUTTER. - On May 11, 1899, Christian Sutter, aged 76 years and 20 days. He leaves a widow, two children, twenty-seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was one of the first Amish Mennonites to settle in this neighborhood, and he could see how the small membership grow to a large congregation, and how many a one, who came after him, was called away before him. He was married twice. With his first wife, Magdalena Nafziger, he lived in matrimony twenty-one years; with his second wife, Barbara Augsburger, twenty-six years. He was a member of the Amish Mennonite Church since his youth, and died in Hopedale, Tazewell Co., Ill., trusting in the mercy of the Lord. Buried on the 14th. Funeral services by Samuel Gerber and J. C. Birky. C.

    Christian's barn was used for the 1875 Amish ministers conference. It has been dismantled and rebuilt at the site of the Illinois Mennonite Historical and Genealogical Society Heritage Center in Metamora. An old Amish saying of his time was “A good barn will pay for a good house, but a good house will not pay for a good barn.”
