PRE. JOSEPH GASCHO.
was born in Woodford Co., Ill., Dec. 14, 1841, died near Milford, Seward Co., Neb., Feb. 3, 1902, aged 60 years, 1 month and 20 days. He was married in 1868 to Maria Buerky, with whom he lived in happy matrimony for 33 years, 10 months and 21 days. To this union were born seven sons and five daughters, two sons preceding him in death. He united with the Amish Mennonite church, and for thirty years he served the church as a minister of the gospel. His earnest admonitions to follow Jesus will not soon be forgotten. His affliction was cancer in the face. He suffered greatly, but patiently, and when it became evident that the malady was incurable he was resigned and said, "God's will be done." When the end drew near he called to his side his beloved companion who had so loyally and lovingly ministered to his needs and who had for so many years shared with him the joys and sorrows of life, and earnestly admonished her to remain faithful unto the Lord. He also called his children, one by one and gave them loving, fatherly counsel, entreating them to be faithful and obedient to their dear mother and to follow Jesus. May the admonitions of a loving father never be forgotten. His end was peace. Funeral services were conducted at the house by Nicholas Roth, of Milford, Neb., and at the M. H., by Chr. Rediger, of Hamilton, Neb., and P. P. Hershberger and Chr. Beller, of Shickley, Neb. May the God of all comfort sustain the bereaved ones in their affliction.

"Mary Gascho, daughter of Joseph and Barbara Burkey, was born in Woodford Co., Ill., Dec. 28, 1850; died at the home of her daughter near Milford, Nebr., Dec. 25, 1938. She was united in marriage to Joseph Gascho March 14, 1868. They moved to Seward Co., Nebr., in 1877 where she lived most of her life. This union was blessed with 7 sons and 5 daughters. Her husband preceded her in death in the year 1902. Two sons, John and Jacob, and 1 daughter, Mrs. Katie Bawel of Wood River, also preceded her. She leaves 5 sons and 4 daughters: Mrs. Lena Roth, Ben, Chris, and Will Gascho and Mrs. Ammon Hershberger of Milford, Nebr.; Joseph Gascho and Mrs. Will Stutzman of Wood River, Nebr.; Arthur Gascho of Broken Bow, Nebr.; and Mrs. Peter Stutzman of Julesburg, Colo.; and also 39 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, 1 sister (Mrs. Jacob Saltzman) and 1 brother (Peter Burkey) both of Milford, Nebr.; and a host of friends and acquaintances. She accepted Christ in her youth, uniting with the Mennonite Church of which she remained a faithful member until her end. She was always a kind mother exercising a Christian spirit to all. Funeral services by Bro. J. E. Zimmerman assisted by Bro. L. O Schlegel."

Gasho. - On the 7th of September, in Livingston county, Ill., JOHN GASHO, aged 62 years. He was buried on the 8th, followed by a large concourse of friends and relatives. Funeral sermons were preached by John Egly, John P. Schmitt and Christian Schloegel from I Cor. 15, and I Thess. 4:13-18. He was a pious man, beloved by all and a light in our Church. He observed daily prayer with his family, came regular to meeting and appreciated humility. He often complained about the pride prevailing among our young people. He also said before he expired that he had a desire to depart and to be with Christ. He was a faithful member of the Omish Mennonite Church, where the funeral service was preached, in Livingston county, Ill

"Joseph Birkey was born in Bavaria, Germany, in 1816. He came to the United States in 1844, and settled first in New Orleans, Louisiana. He then moved to Tazewell County for one year, then returned to Germany. He married Barbara Eikstein in Bavaria, then returned to the United States."

Joseph, his bride-to-be Barbara Augustine (later 'Eigsti'), her sister Catherine, and his younger brother Valentine sailed on the Kilby, arriving at New Orleans in October 1846. The passenger list shows "Joseph Bircky 29; Augustine Cath. 21; Barbara, 20; and Birky Valentine 26." Christian, Elizabeth, and Catherine migrated in 1846.

On 2 Nov 1861, Joseph petitioned the judge of the Tazewell County Court to name Daniel Uncicker (sic) administrator of the estate of Valentine Birkey. This document gives the date of death as 23 Sept 1861.

Birkey. - Barbara (Eigstein) Birkey was born Jan. 23, 1827; died Aug. 6, 1911; aged 84 y. 6 m. 12 d. She was united in marriage Aug. 22, 1847, with Joseph Birkey and lived in matrimony 55 y. 6 m. To this union were born 4 sons and 6 daughters. Her husband, 2 brothers, 5 sisters, 2 sons, 1 daughter, and 13 grandchildren preceded her to the spirit world. 2 sons, 5 daughters, 44 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers, 2 sisters and a host of relatives and friends mourn her departure.
Sister Birkey was a faithful member in the A. M. Church from youth. She lost her eyesight 13 years ago. She suffered much in her last days, but bore all patiently to the end. She was laid to rest in the East Fairview Cemetery near Woodriver, Nebr. Services by the brethren, Christian Rediger and Jos. Whitaker.

Barbara lost her eyesight thirteen years before her death, but she continued to knit for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Valentine, father of thirteen children, all of whom emigrated to America, although not all at the same time, lived in Gern, Bavaria, when his children were born. The year after his wife died, Valentine, with some of his family came to America. He left Gern near Munich, Bavaria with five children, and with 10,000 fl., one of the larger amounts taken out of the country--much more than most immigrants. His brother Christian took the same amount. Valentine was of the "Little Red" Birky's. The family’s emigration is documented in Friedrich Blendinger’s material (the emigration to North America from the governmental district Upper Bavaria in the years 1846-1852, in: ZBLG (magazine for Bavarian national history) 27 (1964), p. 431-487. Nicholas owned a large farm near Munich and was also a preacher of the Mennonite church.

“Nikolaus and his family moved from Strasbourg in Alsace to Unterweilbach near Dachau. Later they leased the castle farm in Pellheim. Other Amish families and individuals were also in the neighborhood. For example, the families of Christian and Valentin Birki who owned properties in Arzbach. Christian Habecker's Amish family also lived there for three years as subtenants of Christian Birki. Also tenants in this area were the Zehr and Hiser families, all of whom were named in the Pellheim parish register. Jakob Müller was a farmhand in Pellheim, Christian Gascho and his wife Maria née Güngerich in Pellheim, Georg Hochstettler farmhand in Arzbach, the siblings Johann, Barbara & Valentin Ackermann also in Arzbach and Anna Zwalter (Schowalter), “Austräglerin” or elderly farm woman in Pellheim. We may assume that all of the people named in Pellheim were employed by Nickolaus Augustin or lived on the farm. According to the church register, Christian Gascho was the subtenant of Nikolaus Augustin on the estate in Pellheim. The same was the case with Christian and Katharina Jotter (née Augsburger).

“Nikolaus Augustin must have been a very good farmer, because in the Staatsarchiv I found an application for a certificate of property by the Pellheim community dated 21 May 1841 when he left his lease there. It records what he had in terms of cash, agricultural property, and equipment and livestock, as well as outstanding debts from creditors.” [Totaling 16,174 Guilders]

  Nicholas, a farmer, owned a large farm in Germany.  He was also a preacher in the Mennonite Church.  The children received training in the home which produces industrious and faithful citizens.  Being instructed in the faith of their parents, they accepted Christ as their Saviour in their youth.  Nicholas died at about 50 years of age in Munich, Germany.  Elizabeth, the youngest daughter, contracted dipthiria and died from the disease in 1849, at approximately 7 years of age.

  In Germany, the law of conscription required all young men to serve three years in military duty.  The family left a comfortable, prosperous farm to come to America, suffering the privations of pioneer life.  They came not for financial gain, but to escape militarism, believing that it was not in accordance with the teachings of Holy Scriptures.

  The first to come to America, was Joseph Burkey.  He lived for one year in Tazewell Co., Illinois, then returned to Germany and married Miss Barbara Eigsti, in 1847.  The following year Joseph Burkey with his new bride, Barbara and her brother, Christian, came to America and settled in Tazewell Co., Illinois.  Following the death of Nicholas Augstien, his widow Barbara and the remaining children joined the family in America.  The trip was made in small wooden vessels, taking 56 days to cross the Atlantic Ocean.  They landed in New York City, proceeded by rail to Chicago and by canal to LaSalle, Illinois, on by boat to Hennepin, and by team to Bureau County, Illinois.

  Barbara Augstien owned land two miles south of Morton, Illinois.  A deed was recorded on August 19, 1853 in Tazewell County.  The land was purchased for the sum of $5,000.  Barbara Augstien is recorded in both the 1870 and 1880 federal census as residing with her youngest son, John Eigsti.  On December 26, 1880, she passed away at the age of 80.  She was buried in the Willow Springs Mennonite Church Cemetery, near Tiskilwa, Illinois.

She found help in the Amish community in one Johann Springer, who lived nearby. He assumed guardiandship for the minor children, and helped when she sold her property. In December 1852 she applied to emigrate to America. Barbara traveled to Morton, Illinois with her remaining children: 2 adults and 5 minor children, in the spring of 1853.
