Funeral services for Earl Blackwell, 87, Union, were held march 23, at Oltmann Funeral Home, Union. Interment was in Union Cemetery. Mr. Blackwell died march 20, 1999.

He is survived by two daughters, Alice Anzalone and husband Anthony of Union, and Janet Garber and husband Bob of Catawissaq; three grandchildren, Leesa Gabel and husband Craig, and Robert and Nathan Garber; one sister, Mildred Venneri of Harrisburg, Pa; two brothers, M.D. “Squeech” Blackwell and wife Bonnie of Leslie, and “Bus” Blackwell and wife Eve of St. Louis; other relatives and many friends.

Mrs. Alice Blackwell, nee Childers, was born October 27, 1887, and was called to her heavenly home September 21, 1935, at the age of 47 years, 10 months, and 26 days.
Mrs. Blackwell made her confession in Christ in the early part of her life and remained a most devoted Christian until the und.
She lived a quiet and peaceful life in the realm of her household, where all her interests were centered. She was a devoted wife and a loving and sacrificing mother, and these little characteristics will long be remembered by the broken hearted ones left to mourn.
She is not here to comfort and console her children and never again will they hear that gentle voice, or feel the loving arms sheltering them from error and pain, as they grope their way along the misty pathway of young manhood and womanhood.
A loving husband and five children are mourning the departure of this beautiful life. The children are Earl, Ervin, Milford, Mildred, and Milton, who are all at home with their father and one grandchild. Besides her own family, she leaves to mourn for her three brothers, Fred Childers of Ellinwood, Kansas, Robert of Kansas City, and Lee of Seattle, Washington, and one sister, Mrs. C.R. Farrar of Union, MO.
Four sisters and two brothers precede her into the unknown world. She will also be missed by her many friends and neighbors to whom she expressed such a wonderful example of neighborly kindness. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. B. Adams at the home, and thence to the family cemetery near Beaufort.

His two sons were listed as farm laborers. Mary and Effie were in school, Ada at home. Living with the family was Elizabeth West Keeney, Clarissa's sister, who later married Tom.

The 1920 census reports that Tom's parents were born in Tennessee, but this may be incorrect.

Again the Angel of Death has entered our threshold and taken from our midst Mrs. Clarissa Blackwell, the beloved wife of Thomas Blackwell of Gerald.

Clarissa West was born near Walbert Oct 31, 1861 and was married to Thomas Blackwell May 1, 1882 and died March 29, 1907, age 45 years, 5 months, and 89 days.
Deceased leaves to mourn her untimely death a husband, two sons, four daughters, an aged mother, one brother and two sisters.

She was stricken Sunday morning March 24 with paralysis and while everything was done that could be done by human hands, she grew rapidly worse and all realized the case to be hopeless from the start.

To the bereaved family our hearts go out in sympathy. Could we but relieve one pain and thus help them to bear their burden, we feel the bitter pangs of giving up a loving wife and mother.
In her death, the husband has lost an affectionate wife and the children a fond and loving mother and the community an esteamable neighbor.

The remains were tenderly laid to rest in the New Friendship cemetery Sat, March 30, in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. Rev. W. B. Adams conducted the funeral services with two fitting and appropriate sermons, one at the residence and the other at the cemetery, each paving a beautiful tribute to the faith she embraced while yet in her tender years.

Description:A former post office in the northwest part of Boone Township, about one mile east of the present Gerald. The post office was established in 1855 and discontinued in 1907. Shotwell was probably a local family name; at least one Shotwell is known to have lived in the eastern part of the county. Cf. the Illmo (formerly Shotwell) Mines, above. No record remains, however, of the origin of the name. The temptation to invent an etymological explanation was irresistible, and at least two typical but contradictory stories are current locally. One tells of an early shooting affray between two pioneers who claimed the same deer lick. They met on a dark night and began shooting at each other until they had used up all their ammunition without inflicting any injuries. In mockery of their bad marksmanship, John Seaton, the first postmaster, decided to call the new post office Shotwell. Others ascribe the name to some particular exhibition of good shooting. Shotwell was an early name of the area which became Gerald. “Shotwell, located in Township 42, Range 3 west, was so named by John Seaton, the first postmaster, from an incident which occurred in the pioneer days of the county. Mr. Alexander Gregory and an old Mr. Wages, pioneer settlers, each claimed the same deer lick, and both went to it one night to kill deer. The deer failed to appear, and, after waiting for a long time, each became aware of the other’s presence. They soon began firing at each other, and fired away all their ammunition, without personal injury to either. Shortly after this exciting but, as it turned out, harmless episode Mr. Seaton was appointed postmaster, and in honor of such good shooting named the postoffice Shotwell. The little village was built some years afterward, and the name, was, as a matter of course, applied to the village.”

George H. Childress died at his home, south of Leslie, Friday evening, May 5, 1911, at the age of fifty-six years. He was well and favorably known all over Franklin County. Always friendly and cordial, he won many friends. He was an honored member of the Champion City Lodge of Modern Woodmen of America. He was a faithful and earnest worker in the Christian church at Antioch where he will be sadly missed by all. He was tenderly laid to rest in the old family cemetery where so many of his loved ones now rest. Deceased leaves four sons, Ben, Fred, Robert, and Leo; five daughters, Mrs. James A. Graham, Mrs. Charles Farrar, Mrs. Henry Blackwell, Mrs. Charles P. Taylor, Mrs. John Blackwell, all living near Leslie. 
Funeral services were conducted at the home and at the cemetery by Rev. W.B. Adams, his pastor for many years at Antioch church. The M.W.A. conducted int funeral services at the cemetery. The grave was covered with beautiful wreathes and clusters of flowers. Everything that loved ones could do to relieve him and restore him to health was done, but a loving Father called to His--weary child, "Come home," to that beautiful shore, where times ceases never, and night comes no more, There Jesus is reigning--we'll ever be blest; We'll sever no more in the land of sweet rest. The bereaved ones have the sincere sympathy of all. A Friend.

Died at her home near Leslie, on Saturday morning, February 23, 1907, Sarah Frances, wife of Geo. H. Childers, in the fifty-first year of her age. Although her health had not been good for some time, her death was sudden and unexpected, as is usual in heart failure. She passed gently and peacefully into that sleep that knows no waking. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband and ten children. The surviving children are: Sarah, the eldest, who is with her father; Lucy, wife of James Graham, near Champion City; Nancy, wife of Chas. Farrar, near Leslie; Mary, wife of Henry Blackwell, of Gerald; Ida, wife of Chas. Taylor, of Gerald; Alice, wife of John Blackwell, of Gerald; and Benjamin, Frederick, Robert, and Leo, who are at home. One child died in infancy several years ago. The deceased was a daughter of Mr. Stewig, who was well and favorably known in this county. She was an earnest and devoted Christian worker in the Antioch Sunday School and church of which she has been a member ever since its organization. Not only by precept but by example did she strive to train her children in the way they should go. With them she studied the Word of God and sang the beautiful songs, and although her voice will no more be heard in the choir at Antioch where she will be so sadly missed, she has joined the invisible choir in that beautiful "home over there." Our heartfelt sympathy we extend to the bereaved ones.

Blackwell is an ancient locational English name, derived from Old English "blaec" meaning black and "waella" meaning stream. Ancient Blackwell family history begins with "Blacheuuelle" in Derbyshire, where they held a family seat (feudal home) and "Blacwaelle" in Durham. One of the first surnames ever recorded in England was Blacewellan in 1012 in Wocestershire. The Blackwell coat of arms is silver with a black greyhound: black stands for constancy and the greyhound nobility; popular in Greek and Roman mythology, greyhounds were long reserved for nobility ownership in England. In America the Blackwell genealogy begins in Massachusetts and Virginia in the mid-1630s.

The 1920 census gives the birthplace of Tom Blackwell’s parents as TN. Earlier census records give Missouri as the birthplace of Clayton. Cleresa Jane was born in KY according to the 1850 census.

During a visit to Missouri in 1999, the story of Clayton’s death by Earl Blackwell, grandson, was related to me: Clayton was wearing a “frock” coat (similar to a cape) when a turkey hunter mistook him for a turkey and shot him. Clayton was taken to his home and as he lay dying he pled that the man would not be hanged, for the shooting was an accident. However, no documentation of Clayton’s death or the fate of the shooter has been found to date.

Clayton’s burial site has not been established. A Blankenship is buried in Little Creek Cemetery (Clayton’s first wife?).

A William Blackwell living near Clayton in 1840 and 1850, with wife Mary, and children Agnes, Phoebe, William, Robert, and Locky, could be a relative--perhaps a brother. There are those who say William M. Blackwell is a brother to Clayton and that their father is Mathew Blackwell b. 1782 or 1795. Information not confirmed.

OBITUARY: THE MILLENNIAL HARBINGER, Bethany, Va, May 1857, Vol. VII, No. V, Page 299.
Died on Thursday morning, Dec. 25, 1866 (sic), at his residence in Franklin Co., Mo., in the 45th year of his age, of Pneumonia, Henry Childers, for 25 years a consistent member of the Christian Church. He retained to within a few hours of his death his full vigor of mind, and expressed entire resignation and confidence in the Redeemer. (Sent in by E.R.C.). NOTE: The notice had the death year listed as 1866, but the date on the paper was May 1857. Henry actually died Dec. 25, 1856.

Henry Childers, son of Thomas G. & Mary Richardson Childers. Married first to his cousin Elizabeth Maupin, the daughter of John Maupin and Elizabeth Richardson. 

Married second to Sarah Mitchell Adams, the widow of Elijah Adams, Jr. Henry was the father of six children with his first wife, and the father of four more children with his second wife.

Probate document from Franklin Co. Probate Court, Union, MO:
Know all men by these presents that we the undersigned heirs of Henry Childers, deceased, do consent and agree to the selling off of one hundred and twenty acres of land belonging to said estate containing the Mansion House and all other improvements connected with the same, lying, on the said one hundred and twenty acres being as we believe equal to one-third of the real estate of said deceased. In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seal this March 11, 1859.

Probably arrived in Boone Township about 1830 (see Franklin Co., MO 1878 Atlas Map, (reprint). History of Townships, Boone Township, p. 14.

The 1850 census shows four Adams children living with Henry and Sarah: William age 12, Robert age 11, Lucy age 9 and Susan S. age 7. (Also, children Joanna 11 mo, William Adams 12, Robert Adams 11, and Lucy Adams 9.
