    Notes:

The oldest child of Christian Kinsinger was Johannes Kinsinger, who came to be known as John Kinsinger in America. He was born on October 21,1815 in Contwig, Germany. He was considered to be a very bright young man. At the age of 19 years, he determined that his future lay in coming to America and he traveled with a small group of Mennonite immigrants by ship from the Netherlands to New York, and on through Pennsylvania to Butler County, Ohio , a center of Amish and Mennonite life in the Midwest. John (Jean) Kinsinger (19) is listed on page 1 of the Passenger List of the ship "Sully" which arrived in New York from Le Havre on November 5, 1834.

In Ohio, he was a hired laborer on Amish and Mennonite farms. In a few short years, the frugal John had saved enough money to operate his own farm. He continued the family tradition of leasing land. In 1836, he met another recently-arrived Mennonite immigrant, Barbara Smith and they were married in 1837.

In 1840, the family (as John Kensinger) was living in St. Clair Township, Butler County, Ohio and consisted of 1 male and 1 female (John and Barbara) age 20-30 years, and 1 male and 1 female under 5 years (John Jr. and Magdalena). St. Clair Township in Butler County is in the far southwestern corner of Ohio surrounding the village of Overpeck.
1840 US Census, Ohio, Butler Co., St. Clair Township, Sheet #4.

In 1850, the family was living in Fairfield Township, Butler County, Ohio and consisted of John (34), Barbara (34), Malinda (12), Barbara (10), Jacob (8), John (6), Anna (4), and Elizabeth (3 months) along with two laborers: John Reddigel (Rediger) and Wendel Greaser. It is unclear whether the family moved slightly south, or whether the township line moved north.

They had seven children when Barbara died in 1860. Shortly after Barbara's funeral, the devastated widower loaded his children into a wagon and left for Illinois, stopping near Groveland in Tazewell, County. He knew some of the residents of Groveland (Christian Bechler) who had lived in Butler County before coming to Illinois and was able to lease some farmland almost immediately.

One of those Groveland families was the Christian Wagler family. John knew Christian and his wife Catherine Ulrich Wagler and their children well. The Wagler's and John had all came to America around the same time and had been members of the same congregation in Ohio. Even so, it was a surprise to many when the 41 year-old widower with seven children married the 21 year-old daughter of Christian and Catherine Wagler, Barbara Wagler, in 1861.

John and Barbara Wagler Kinsinger had eight children. John became a highly successful farmer in Tazewell County. In addition to raising a total of 15 children, the couple opened their home to several orphans. John was gregarious, articulate, and well-informed. He was very interested in politics and business. He also taught himself to read and write English. That made him an important man in the largely German-speaking Mennonite community. He often served as a translator or go-between for transactions between the German-speaking Amish and Mennonites, and the English-speaking locals. For this reason, he was frequently called to court. It is said that he provided this service free of charge and earned much good will among his brethren.

John Kinsinger died in October, 1900 at the age of 85. Barbara Kinsinger died two years later. Both are buried in the Landes Cemetery, one mile southeast of Groveland. Of the 15 children of John Kinsinger, almost all grew to be successful. They spread from Pennsylvania to Wyoming and John Kinsinger's descendents are now present in every state of the Union. Notes:

“French records prove that the man who married Katharina Ulrich in 1831 in France and fathered her first child was named Jacob Wagler. But, in America, Katharina Ulrich’s husband was called Christian Wagler. Nothing is known from French documentation about Christian Wagler, except that he signed the death document of his father in 1826 in La Croix. Perhaps Christian Wagler set out for America with the family of Jacob Wagler in 1833 and, before or after crossing the Atlantic, married his younger brother’s wife--supposing, of course, that she had been widowed in an untimely fashion--and thereby merged the identity and responsibility of that brother with his own.”

    Wagler/Berse
“The groom is actually called “Jacques Berse” in the couple’s French civil marriage record, to which he signed his name as “Jakob Bers” in crude antique German script. Alteration of the Germanic surname Wagler to Bers(e) in French must somehow have been justifiable linguistically.”

“The surname Wagler, like Wagner, was obviously originally drawn from wagon-building and/or the wheelwright’s trade. The rare French noun ber(s), “the side rail of a cart over which canvas may be stretched,” would seem to lie behind this name change: Tresor de la Langue Francaise...vol. 4 (Paris, 1975), p. 400.s.v., Bs. The Wagler surname appears frequently in French records as Berse, but often the male Wagler in question simply signs his name as Wagler in old German script to the French document naming him as Berse.”

According to Tazewell County, Illinois Cemeteries Volume Two, the headstone of Christian Wagler in Railroad Cemetery at Elm Grove says he was born Jan. 30, 1803, lived 73 years, 10 months, and 22 days, and died Dec. 22, 1877.

The 'Christian Wogler' household appears on the 1840 census of Ross, Butler County. It is checked off as two males under 5 [Christian H. and Joseph]; one male 5-10 [Peter]; one male 10-15; one male 30-40 [Christian]; one female under 5 [Barbara]; one female 5-10 [Katharina/Catherine]; and one female 30-40 [Catherine Ulrich]. Christian worked as a finishing carpenter in Ohio.

The family came to Tazewell County in 1844. The household appears on the 1850 census of Tazewell County as farmer Christian Wagler, 51, France; Catharine, 54, France; Peter, 17, France; Catharine, 16, Ohio; Christian, 14, Ohio; Barbara, 13, Ohio; Joseph, 12, Ohio; and Isaac, 10, Ohio. From the names of their next door neighbors, it is apparent that they were already living on Allentown Road at Elm Grove: Valentine, Andrew, and Joseph Birky were holding land awaiting the arrival of their father Valentine from Bavaria.
By 1860 the Elm Grove household consisted of oldest son Peter Wagler, 27, France; Catherine, 21; Illinois; and Christian, 7 months, Illinois. On the 1870 census Peter's family has moved to Morton, while the parents and two sons have return to the Elm Grove farm: farmer Christian Wagler, 67, France; Catharine, 71; Joseph, 35; and Christian, 34. The 1880 census shows Catharine, 83, living with her son Joseph, 42, at Elm Grove.

    Taken from "Roanoke Centennial History”:

The first newspaper in Roanoke was published in 1884, and was called the Era. The publisher was George Holton. It was published in the basement of the Audi building which today houses Lorene's.
It was established at the time of the county seat contest in 1883 and, when the election failed to remove the county seat from Metamora to Roanoke, its publication was abandoned. It did not continue over one year. There is one issue of the Era in existence today.

June 28, 1895 - Quite an exciting runaway occurred on our streets this afternoon. About 4 o'clock Peter Ulrich, Jr., was coming up Broad Street when his team became unmanageable, throwing him out just before they passed The Call office. They turned too short at the corner of Main Street upsetting Theo Herbst's buggy, breaking a wheel. After running down Main a block they turned west, passed the post office and ran into a tree at the Brubaker corner, where they were caught. Mr. Ulrich had barely started them up, when away they went for another spin. At Rapp's corner he was again thrown out, the neck yoke broke, letting the tongue down and things began to look serious, when they turned into A. Rapp's yard, and were again brought to a stand still by a catalpa tree. By this time the whole town was out. Mr. Ulrich had a small bone in his hand broke, but escaped very fortunate.
