    Litwiller, Phoebe, daughter of John and Mary (Rich) Good, was born in Minier, Ill., July 21, 1889; died at Maple Lawn Nursing Home, Eureka, Ill., Nov. 24, 1979; aged 90 y. On Jan. 19, 1908, she was married to John E. Litwiller, who died in June 1967. Surviving are 6 daughters (Alice, Dora Eichelberger, Clara Hartman, Ruth Imhoff, Lila Hartman, and Velma Wiebe), 3 sons (Oliver, Elmer, and Clayton), 3 sisters (Rosie Egli, Esther Stichter, and Ruth Good), 32 grandchildren, and 64 great-grand-children. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 3 sisters. She was a member of the Hopedale Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held on Nov. 27, in charge of James Detweiler and Aden Yoder; interment in the Mennonite Cemetery, Hopedale.

    Litwiller.--John Litwiller was born in Butler Co. Ohio, Feb. 27, 1841; died very suddenly July 15, 1922; aged 81 y. 4 m. 18 d. His mother died when he was six years old. At the age of ten he with his father, brothers and sisters moved from Ohio to Tazewell Co., Ill., settling near Hopedale. He united with the Amish Mennonite Church in his youth and remained faithful to the end. He was united in marriage to Fanny Birky Nov. 8, 1863. To this union were born six sons and five daughters; two dying in infancy. He leaves his aged companion, 9 children, 55 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, one sister (Mrs. Nichols Martin) to mourn his sudden departure. "The Lord has given, the Lord has taken, Blessed be the name of the Lord." Funeral services July 17 at the home by Daniel Nafziger, and at the A. M. Church near Hopedale by Jonas Litwiller and Samuel Gerber. Text, Phil. 1:21.

    Litwiller - Fannie Birky was born near Tremont, Ill., Nov 16, 1845; died at the home of her daughter (Lydia Nafziger) in Hopedale, Ill., Dec. 21, 1930; aged 85 y. 1 m. 5 d. In the 1863 she was united in marriage to John Litwiller who preceded her in death. To this union were born eleven children, two of whom died in infancy. She leaves five sons and two daughters to mourn her departure, as follows: Mrs. Lydia Nafziger, Mrs. Valentine Springer, Ben, Amos, Mrs. J. W. Springer, Simon, John E., Aaron and Mrs. Andrew C. Birky; also one brother (A. D. Birky), and Two sisters (Mrs. Mary Egli and Lizzie Birky). She also leaves fifty-nine grandchildren and forth-nine great-grandchildren. She united with the Amish Mennonite Church in her youth and remained faithful to the end. Funeral services were held at Hopedale Mennonite Church Dec. 24, conducted by Bro. J. A.     John, son of Christian and Jacobina (Ehresman) Good, was born near Hopedale, Ill, May 2, 1862; died Dec 9, 1934; aged 72 y, 7 m, 7 d. 

    He was married Oct. 11, 1888, to Mary Rich, who with the following children survives him; Phoebe Litwiller, Hopedale; Alvin Good, Armington; Lydia Eichelberger, Bloomington; Simon Good, Minier; Alma Litwiller, Armington; Rosa Egli, and Esther Stichter, Hopedale; and Ruth, at home.

    Two children preceded him in death, 1 son (Jonas) died in infancy and 1 daughter (Emma) at the age of 34 years.

    Surviving also are 38 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 2 sisters (Susan Reeser, Eureka, Ill, and Magdalena Augsburger, Flanagan, Ill), and four brothers (Chris and Peter Good of Fisher, Ill, Jacob Good of Kokomo, Ind, and Joe Good of Chicago, Ill). The home was also opened to a foster son (Pearl Cooper of Camden, Mo). 

    Besides these, he leaves many other relatives and friends to mourn his departure. 

    He united with the Mennonite Church in his youth and remained a faithful member until death. Father has always been in good health until May 1 when embolism began to claim his body --- attacking his left leg, which resulted in amputation; later attacking him again, making the amputation of his other leg necessary; the last attack being in his lung, which caused his death. We who have seen his patience in the suffering he bore, and the expressing of his readiness for his eternal home can feel our loss is his gain. 

    Funeral services were held Dec 12 at the Hopedale Mennonite Church, conducted by brethren Ben Springer and Simon Litwiller. Interment in Mennonite Cemetery.

    Good - Mary, daughter of John and Magdalena Rich, was born in Muenchenstein, Switzerland, Dec. 2, 1866; died Oct 4, 1936; aged 69 y, 10 m, 2 d.

    She came to America at the age of 16 years. She was married to John Good, Oct 11, 1888. 

    Ten children were born to this union: (Phoebe Litwiller, Rosie Egli, Esther Stichter of Hopedale; Alvin Good and Alma Litwiler of Armington; Lydia Eichelberger of Fairbury Simon Good of Kouts, Ind; and Ruth at home). Two children preceded her in death (Emma Egli and a son who died in infancy). They also opened their home to Pearl Cooper of Richland, Mo. She leaves 40 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. 

    Her husband preceded her in death Dec 9, 1934. 
    She has one surviving brother, (Joe Rich of Noble, Iowa), also a half-brother in Germany. 
    She united with the Mennonite Church in her youth and remained a faithful member till death. 

    Mother was taken to the Mennonite Hospital at Bloomington, Oct 1, where she was receiving treatment for ulcers in her eye and seemingly was getting along well. She seemed happy and improved Sunday afternoon; but very suddenly passed at 5:15 PM, apparently of cerebral hemorrhage. Her sudden passing was in fulfillment of her wish which God graciously granted her. 

    Funeral services were held at the Hopedale Mennonite Church on 0ct. 7, conducted by Bro Simon Litwiller, assisted by Bro Ben Springer. Interment in the Hopedale Mennonite cemetery.

Children (all born in IL): Catherine 17; Fanny 15; Christian 13; John 11; Joseph 9; Andrew 7; Jacob 5; and Valentine 3.

    1880 census gives birthplace of Christian’s father and mother as Bavaria.

    Their household appears on the 1850 census of Tazewell County as Christian Burkie, 38, Germany; Christian, 27, Germany [marked as a female, almost certainly meant to be Catherine]; Catharine, 6, Illinois; Fanny, 4 Illinois; Christian, 2, Illinois; and John, 1 Illinois. They are described on the 1880 census of Little Mackinaw as Christon Birky, 70, farmer from Bavaria; Katherine, 60, from France; and four children ranging in ages 22-15. They are buried at Mennonite Cemetery in Hopedale.

    Birky - Catherine Mosiman was born in Germany in the year 1820 and came to this country with her parents when about ten years old. She was married to Christian Birky in 1841, who died Sept. 26, 1885. To this union were born six sons and four daughters; one son died Sept. 12, 1900. Sister Birky was converted in early life and lived a consistent Christian life. She died Feb. 13, of the infirmities of old age; aged 89 y. She leaves to mourn her death, 9 children, 80 grandchildren, 96 great-grandchildren. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints." Buried near Hopedale, Ill., Feb. 16. Services by Daniel Nafziger and A. H. Leaman.

    Obit: Herald of Truth, May 1903:
    "On May 4, 1903, at her home near Milner, Ill., of diabetes, Jacobina Good, nee Erisman, aged 69 Y., 1M., 15D. The last few weeks of her life she suffered greatly. She leaves seven children and 38 grandchildren to mourn her loss, but not as those who have no hope. She was loved by all who knew her and was a true pattern of Christianity. Her life companion preceded her to the spirit world fourteen years ago. Funeral services on the 6th at the A.M. meeting house, where a large concourse of friends assembled to pay a last tribute of respect. Services by Bish J.C.Berky, Pre. Dan Zehr in German and Pre. Samuel Gerber in English."
