GOSHEN, IN. - ?Edith Pearl Yordy, 93, of Goshen died Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Greencroft Healthcare, Goshen. She was born in rural Eureka, Illinois, to Walter and Alma (Eigsti) Yordy on April 6, 1924.

Edith made a Christian faith response and joined Roanoke Mennonite Church by baptism at the age of 10. When she was 13, her family moved to McHenry, Illinois, where she studied as a freshman in high school. Another move took her to Kelly High School in Chicago, from which she graduated. She loved the city.

Edith’s career included working in a variety of nursing fields, but she found public health nursing most satisfying. In the early 1950s she was a volunteer nurse at the Pacific Garden Mission. She also worked in a Chicago children’s hospital.

In Chicago, she was involved in the Mennonite Home Mission and, when it closed, at Englewood Mennonite Church. In Chicago, Edith was part of the Christian Business and Professional Women’s Council meetings as recording secretary and monthly program planner. In 1972 Lombard Mennonite became her church home. Since moving to Goshen in 1991, Edith attended College Mennonite Church, and became a member in 2002. She also attended Bible Study Fellowship classes for four years

When her family needed her caring skills, she was there for her sister Evelyn who died at the age of 25 from juvenile diabetes. She moved into the home place in Chicago and cared for her aging parents as well.

Edith loved visiting with people, traveling, reading, completing crossword puzzles and playing Scrabble. In her earlier years at Greencroft, she enjoyed weekly visits and reading to several healthcare residents.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Richard and James; and sister, Evelyn.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 3 p.m. in the Koinonia Room at College Mennonite Church.

Memorial gifts may be directed to the church or the Anabaptist Biblical Seminary, Elkhart.
