NORMAL — Myrna L. Slagell Park, 94, of Normal, passed away at 11:07 p.m. Thursday (March 19, 2015) at Heritage Health in Normal.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home in Bloomington with the Rev. Tim Schrag officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home. Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home in Bloomington is assisting the family with arrangements.
Interment will be at Funks Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mennonite Church of Normal, Illinois Mennonite Historical and Genealogical Society, or McLean County Museum of History.
Myrna Lucille was born Dec. 21, 1920, in rural Chenoa, a daughter of Roy A. Slagell and Lavina G. Roeschley Slagell. She married Homer W. Park on Dec. 17, 1950, in the Troyer Memorial Chapel in Bloomington. Homer preceded her in death on Dec. 20, 1997.
Surviving are two sons, W. Bradley (Cheryl) Park, Bloomington, and David A. Park, Normal; six grandchildren, Brent Park, San Antonio, Texas; Ashley (fiancé, Patrick O’Rourke) Park, Bloomington; Laura Bishop, Bloomington; Missy (Chad) Holliday, Normal; Amanda (Andy Dickson) Park, Bloomington; and Andrew (Grace Apts) Park, New York, N.Y.; two sisters-in-laws, Ruth Slagell, Normal, and Betty Slagell, Mount Pleasant, Iowa; several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Robert, Roger and Delmar Slagell; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Slagell.
Myrna was a graduate of Flanagan High School and Mennonite Hospital School of Nursing in Bloomington. She did her post-graduate work in medical and surgical nursing at Polyclinic Hospital, New York, N.Y. She worked as medical-surgical supervising registered nurse at Mennonite Hospital in Bloomington for many years. She was a member of the Mennonite Church of Normal.
Myrna had a passion for the preservation of historical and genealogical records. She was a charter member of the McLean County Genealogical Society, serving as president in 1967 and 1968; a charter member of the Illinois State Genealogical Society, serving as president in 1974 and 1975; and a founding member of the Illinois Mennonite Historical and Genealogical Society, serving as vice president in 1980, 1982, 1984, and program chair in 1988. She was awarded lifetime membership and charter member awards in these organizations and was instrumental in the establishment of the Illinois Mennonite Heritage Center Library and Museum in Metamora. She wrote and published many articles for the Illinois Mennonite Heritage Quarterly. She was also a member of Questers -- Jesse Fell Chapter 226 and the National Historical Association.
In addition to her love of genealogy, Myrna loved to travel the country antiquing, bringing home finds as an antique dealer. She also loved painting and was an avid reader. Her sons and grandchildren will always remember her for the books she chose for each family member every Christmas. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
The family would like to extend its gratitude to the health-care providers at Heritage Health in Normal, who provided Myrna with compassionate, professional and skilled medical care.
