  • Notes
    • Lived in a large community house at Kaiserslautern, Bavaria, Germany in the early 19th century.
The family knew John Burkey, who had come to America several years earlier and were living in Illinois at Hennepin on the Illinois River.
See source no. for description of the journey to Illinois, began June 1836 from Bavaria. Landed in New York, boarded a boat and traveled by the Hudson River to Albany and the Erie canal to Buffalo. From there by the way of the Great Lakes, and landed Fort Dearborn (now Chicago). There they obtained a team and wagon they traveled overland to Hennepin in Bureau County. They walked that distance as a family of father, mother, twelve children and about that many grandchildren. The trip took over three weeks.

The first winter four of their children erected a one room log cabin in which the four families lived the next winter, having only the large old fashioned chimney fire place to cook with and keep them warm. [3]
