Notes - Obit: Gospel Herald, March 1923:
"Jacob Sutter was born Nov. 27, 1833, in Byron [Bayern, or Bavaria], Germany. From there he moved to Illinois where he was united in marriage to Kathrine Wagler. Later they came to Milford, Nebr., where he has lived for 46 years. He died February 26, 1923, in Milford at the age of 89 y. 2 m. 29 d. He united with the Amish Mennonite Church in his youth. He had 15 children (8 sons and seven daughters), 59 grandchildren and about 25 great- grandchildren. His wife died July 30, 1908, with whom he lived in matrimony over 50 years. Three sons, three daughters and eleven grandchildren preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his departure, 5 sons, 4 daughters and one sister, Fannie Birky, Fisher, Ill. On Feb. 14, 1909, he again united in marriage to Magdalena Yordy with whom he lived until death. The cause of his death was lagrippe [sic]. Buried near Milford in East Fairview Cemetery. Services by home ministers."
Jacob's grandson, Christian Suttor (b. May 7, 1902) married Maria Horsch (b. August 31, 1907) in 1943. She was the daughter of Michael Horsch of Hellmannsberg. Christian died on October 12, 1990, and was buried in the Hellmannsberg Cemetery beside his wife, Maria Horsch, who had died on October 13, 1963. (See death notice in family album book.) We had visited with Christian in the 1980s in Bavaria.
At his death, Jacob had 15 children (8 sons and 7 daughters), 59 grandchildren, and about 25 great-grandchildren. (According to the 1900 census, Catherine was the mother of 14 of the children.)
Evidently Jacob and Catherine had a child (or children) who stayed in Bavaria, since all children listed in the 1885 NE census were born in Illinois. One of Jacob’s children was the father of Christian Suttor (see above) who spoke no English and lived his life in Bavaria. [7]
