FISHER — Roy D. Springer, 96, of Fisher passed away Friday (Oct. 7, 2011) at the Gibson Community Hospital Annex, Gibson City.
Roy was born Dec. 23, 1914, on a farm near Bellflower, the son of David V. and Lena Birkey Springer. He attended Prairie Cottage Country School and Bellflower Township High School. He married Edna Sutter on Dec. 30, 1939, in Hopedale. She survives.
Also surviving are his children, Carol (James) Rhodes of Topeka, Kan.; Royal (Beverly) Springer of Fisher; Keith (Kathleen) Springer of Saybrook; and Mark (Mary Jo) Bodenhamer of Newbury Park, Calif. He had 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John, Aaron and Melvin; and two sisters, Elizabeth and Kathryn.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the East Bend Mennonite Church, with the Rev. Michael Dean officiating. Burial will be in East Bend Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church, and one hour prior to service on Wednesday.
Roy and Edna farmed in Bellflower Township during their working years. After retirement they moved to Fisher. They enjoyed volunteering at Ten Thousand Villages in Champaign for 10 years. Roy was a member of East Bend Mennonite Church, Fisher, which he attended his entire life. In his youth he accepted Christ as his savior and was baptized. He and his family attended and assisted with worship and Sunday school at Alexander Chapel (AME) in Gibson City for three years.
On Jan. 2, 2009, Roy and Edna celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at East Bend Mennonite Church with family and friends. Roy was a good and devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by his family. He enjoyed watching his sons’ and grandsons’ sports activities. He dearly loved his grandchildren and they have fond memories of the fun they had together.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sutter Scholarship Fund at Goshen College, Goshen, Ind., or to Mennonite Mission Network, Elkhart, Ind. Lamb Funeral Home, Gibson City, is in charge of the arrangements.
