Email from Justine Oct 2007:
Mom (Alta Detweiler) said that Chris and Lydia Eicher were living in or near Pekin. She has the feeling that he was not a farmer, so perhaps they lived in town. The parents and the two little girls had just finished supper and Chris said that he was going out. Lydia never saw him again. She got word to her brother, our Great Grandpa John Schrock, and he went right over. Grandpa and some other men searched for him all day, thinking he may have fallen in the night, or even got hurt somehow. For several days after that Grandpa searched, but to no avail. Aunt Lyd was of course devastated, and shortly after, moved to Fisher, because she had no means of support. She reported that she and Chris had not had an argument, and she could not believe that he just up and left. Mom isn't sure of the date of this event. Lulu and Lela were both young, and it was after 1891, because Grandpa Schrock was living here. It must have been around the turn of the century, because Grandma Heiser was born in1889, and Lulu was about 10 years younger than her, Mom thinks. What a mystery! Maybe someone in Chris' later life knew he was from Pekin, and returned his body there. Seems like someone who knew the Schrocks would have heard of his death , or seen his stone, and told us. Mom thinks Lydia died in the early '30s and was considered young when she died. So it is entirely possible that Chris died in 1943. Mom said it completely ruined Aunt Lyd's life, and she rarely ever smiled after that. }
