      Lela Carol Birky (May 4, 1930 - December 6, 2011)

Lela Carol Birky was born May 4, 1930, at Albany, OR. After a period of declining health, she passed quietly from this life to her eternal reward on December 6, 2011, at the age of 81 years, 7 months, and 2 days.

Lela was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Sarah (Kenagy) Birkey; one brother, Elden Birky; and one sister, Minerva (Mrs. Elmer Kropf).

She is survived by two brothers, Luke (and his wife Verna) and Wilbur (and his wife Fanni), both of Goshen, IN; one sister, Ruth (Mrs. Bill Kaufmann), of Goshen, IN; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In her youth, Lela accepted Christ as Lord of her life. She lived faithfully for Him until death. In her declining health, she often spoke of longing to go home to be with her Lord and Savior. She was a faithful member of the Faith Hills Mennonite Church at the time of her death.

Sister Lela's life has touched many people. She taught school a number of years. Then she was involved in writing textbooks, and her desire for Bible-based textbooks provided the initial vision for the Rod and Staff textbook work. Though not many people knew Sister Lela, her life and vision has influenced many around the world.

Sister Lela's quiet resignation to her Father's will and her cheerfulness even in the midst of pain and suffering have been a real encouragement and inspiration to those who knew her. Though she is gone, her testimony lives on to those who have been challenged and encouraged by her firm trust in the Lord in all circumstances.

Funeral service, 10:00 a.m., Friday at the Faith Hills Mennonite Church, Crockett, KY, with Bro. William Schueler, Bro. Myron Beachy, and Bro. Lamar Steiner officiating. Burial to follow in the Faith Hills Mennonite Church Cemetery, Crockett, KY. Visitation, 6-9 p.m., Thursday at the church.
