RANTOUL – Gladys Zehr, age 82, passed away on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at Heritage Manor, Gibson City.
Gladys was born March 28, 1928, to John and Rosie Egli in Hopedale. She is survived by her husband, Milo Zehr.
Their children are Nancy (David) Massanari of Green Valley, Ariz., Steve (Cindy) Zehr of Fisher, Jean (Bob) Oswald of Shickley, Neb., Michael (Rebecca) Zehr of Wauseon, Ohio, Susie (Danny) Knox of Gibson City and Julie (Mick) Sommers of Elkhart, Ind.
Milo and Gladys were married on April 8, 1947. They settled 5 miles north of Fisher, where Milo farmed with his father Dan and his brothers, Lester, Alton and Clarence. Gladys raised six children and was a busy homemaker, spending many hours canning and freezing fresh produce, as well as sewing clothing for one and all. She and Milo retired and moved to Northwest Street in Fisher in 1989, where they resided for 18 years. In the fall of 2007, Milo and Gladys moved to Prairie Village in Rantoul. Milo recently moved to Heritage Manor in Gibson City.
Gladys was baptized at Hopedale Mennonite Church and was an active member there until she moved to Fisher, where she and Milo attended East Bend Mennonite Church their entire married life. She was very involved in activities at her church, some of which included teaching Bible school, Sunday school, and women's Bible studies; giving leadership to a variety of youth groups and activities; women's sewing circle; and other activities too numerous to list here.
Gladys was a devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed gardening, spending time with and entertaining her grandchildren, reading, playing table games with friends and family, and family vacations in northern Michigan. At the time of her death, Gladys had 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at East Bend Mennonite Church on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. The memorial service will be held at the same location on Saturday at 10:30 a.m., with a fellowship meal to follow. Lux memorial Chapel, Rantoul, is handling the arrangements.
