      Velda Mae Birkey Birky, 93, of Hopedale, passed away at 7:20 p.m. Thursday (April 12, 2018) at Hopedale Medical Center.
      She was born Dec. 30, 1924, in Gridley, to Silas D. and Amanda Stalter Birkey. She married Loren “Joe” Birky on July 24, 1948, in Flanagan. He passed away Oct. 1, 2005.
      Surviving are three sons, Mark (Jeanne) Birky, Hopedale; Curtis (Jean) Birky, Glenn, Mich.; Jeffry (Millie) Birky, Goshen, Ind.; one daughter, Jane Rittenhouse, Mount Pleasant, Pa.; 10 grandchildren, Aaron Birky, Emily Birky, Jesse Birky, Beth Birky, Seth Birky, Kathryn Birky, Tana Birky, Leah Rittenhouse, Christian Birky, Krista Rittenhouse; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Norma (Merle) Nafziger, Minier, and Joan (John) Litwiller, Minier.

      She was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.
      Velda taught school in Chenoa from 1947 to 1949. She was a homemaker.
      She was a member of Hopedale Mennonite Church, enjoyed being a foster parent, enjoyed volunteering at the Eureka Et Cetera Shop for 30 years.

      A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Mennonite Cemetery in Hopedale, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Hopedale Mennonite Church. Pastor Roger Springer will officiate. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the church.
