FOOSLAND — Leslie V. Birkey, 90, Foosland, died at 7:59 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 15, 2011) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at East Bend Mennonite Church, Fisher, with the Rev. Michael Dean officiating. Burial will be in East Bend Memorial Gardens, Fisher. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church and for one hour before services Thursday.
Memorial tributes may be made to East Bend Mennonite Church, of which he was a member; or to WGNN Radio 102.5-FM in Fisher. Lamb Funeral Home, Gibson City, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Birkey was born Sept. 30, 1920, in Goodfield, a son of Joseph and Ida Zehr Birkey. He married Verena Heiser on Jan. 18, 1951, in Fisher. She survives in Foosland.
Also surviving are his son, Duane (Muriel) Birkey, Foosland; two grandchildren, Alicia (Richard) Rensberger, South Bend, Ind., and Elaine Birkey, Foosland; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Birkey, Gibson City, and Ruby Birkey, Rantoul; and a brother-in-law, Paul Bachman, Metamora.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Leslie worked at M&W Gear Co. in Gibson City for 18 years. He was a farmer and enjoyed working the land. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening and mowing.
