RANTOUL – Verna M. Birkey, 87, of Rantoul went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday (April 16, 2013).
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at the First Mennonite Church, 902 W. Springfield Ave., Urbana. The Rev. Janet Elaine Rasmussen will officiate.
There will be a private burial service at East Bend Memorial Gardens, rural Dewey.
Verna was born Aug. 12, 1925, in Rantoul, a daughter of LeRoy and Leah (Eichelberger) Good. She married Ivan L. Birkey on Jan. 13, 1945, at her parents' home in Rantoul. He preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Marion (Chet) Zehr and Eunice (Lewis) Birky, and a brother, Lloyd (Verda) Good.
She is survived by her twin sister, Verda (Carroll) Moyer of Perkasie, Pa. Also surviving are two daughters, Beverly (Dutch) Potts and Priscilla (Larry) Knox; four grandchildren, Chad Potts, Andrew (Laura), Karl and Noel Knox; and one great-grandson, Caleb Knox.
Verna was a creative homemaker, a constant companion and helpmate to her husband in ministry and farming, a mother, grandmother and friend to her children and grandchildren and a friend to all who knew her.
She loved music, gardening, cooking and sewing. She made countless school kits and blankets to send for overseas relief.
Memorials may be given to First Mennonite Church, Urbana, or the Dewey Community Church, Dewey.
