Phoebe Stauffer Lauber, daughter of John and Barbara Stauffer, was born near Gridley, Illinois, March 3, 1872. She peacefully fell asleep in Jesus at her home in Shickley, Nebraska, April 11, 1957, aged 85 years, 1 month and 3 days.

As a little girl she came with her parents to Milford, Nebr. where she experienced the hardships and privations of pioneer life. She gave her heart to Christ in her youth uniting with the East Fairview Mennonite Church near Milford, remaining faithful to that faith until death.

November 11, 1890 she was united in marriage to Christian Lauber. In 1905 they moved to a farm near Shickley where they lived until they retired in 1927, when they moved to Shickley where she spent the remaining years of her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1929, and two daughters, Katie (Mrs. J. V.) Eichelberger, and Emma at the age of two; also five grandchildren and her brother Joseph Stauffer and sister, Saloma Miller.

Surviving are four sons, John, Elmer and Henry of Shickley and Melvin of Seward, three daughters, Saloma (Mrs. Henry) Noel of Shickley, Fannie (Mrs. Louis) Kennel of Strang and Lydia (Mrs. S. W.) Springer of Pryor, Oklahoma; 29 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; three brothers, Hen, John B. and Chris D. Stauffer all of Milford.

She was a kind, affectionate, self-sacrificing Christian mother, deeply concerned for the spiritual welfare of all her family. She was also deeply interested in the work of the church, her place being filled promptly and regularly, often at great physical sacrifice during her declining years.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, April 13 at 2:30 p.m. at Salem Mennonite Church of Shickley. Bishop P. R. Kennel conducted the services assisted by the local clergy. Burial was in Salem Cemetery.
