Christophe caused a change of surname from Gerard to Schrag to be recorded on August 11, 1863, covering himself, his parents Christophe and Marie Schrag, and three of his siblings: Joseph, Nicolas and Madeleine. The error occurred when an official recording the births of the family members mis-pronounced the surname Schrag as Gerard. The mistake was discovered at the time Christophe was to be married, and he insisted the records be changed.
