- Of Oberdiessbach, Canton Bern, SW. This marriage is the oldest proof of a Bürcki/Holly connection in Switzerland.
“The Bircky, Burcky, and Bircky families originally lived in Oberdiessbach, Canton Bern, Switzerland. Since 1606, the Burcky family was documented in the village chronicle, “Oberdiessbach, History of a Village”. In Oberdiessbach, a son named Hans was born to Niclas Burcki and Anna Holli on January 12, 1673. These families were followers of Jacob Amman who lived in Oberhofen at Lake Thun (Thunersee) in Switzerlalnd, burt soon after 1680 fled to Heidolsheim in Alsace. In the summer of 1693, Amman visited several Swiss villages where people requested baptism. Adherence to their religious views brought many deprivations and finally meant the loss of their native country. The evictions and emigrations to Alsace and the Palatinate had already begun in the 1700’s.
In the Montbeliard (France) Anabaptist records, two Burcki marriage records can be found: Hans Burcki married to Maria Wichter, and Jacob Burcki married to Katharina Ulli. The grooms were brothers from Basel congrfegation in Switzerland. Jacob Burcki married to Katharina Ulli are the parents of Jacob Burcki (m.Elizabeth Grieser), who emigrated to America in 1820.” [1, 2]
