Mary (Good) Birky, daughter of Joseph and Katie (Stalter) Good, was born at Hopedale, Ill., October 24, 1874. She passed away following a long illness at the Fillmore County Hospital, Geneva, Neb., Sunday July 10,1966, at the age of 91 years 8 months and 12 days.
She was united in marriage to John J. Birky of Shickley, Neb., February 14, 1915. He preceded her in death July 28, 1942.
She leaves to mourn her departure five step-children, Lula Boshart of LaJunta, Col., Elsie Roth of Loveland, Col., Ella Augustine of Spartansburg, Pa., Ruth Horsch of Foosland, Ill., and Elmer Birky of Shickley, Neb; one sister, Sarah Bellar of Eureka, Ill.; 20 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband, four sisters and two brothers.
She accepted Christ as her personal Saviour in her youth, and united with the Mennonite Church at Hopedale, Ill. After her marriage, she transferred her membership to the Salem Mennonite church, at Shickley remaining faithful until her death. her concern was for others as long as health permitted. She knitted many bandages for relief while residing at Sunset Home.
Funeral services were held at the Salem Mennonite Church near Shickley Wednesday, July 13, st 10 a.m. clergymen participating, were P. R. Kennel, Fred Reeb, Lee Schlegel and Jake Birky. The message was delivered by Jake Birky.
The text was taken from James 4:14, "Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away." Selections of songs were "Nearer to the Heart of God," "Light After Darkness," "Some Sweet Day," and "My Home Above" sung by a mixed octet composed of Henry Lauber, Wallace Troyer, Don Lichti, Wayne Kempf, Misses Janet Oswald, Ellen Kempf, LaRayne Lauber and Audrey Kennel. Casket bearers ere Nick Lichti, A. Schlegel, Lyle Schweitzer, Leland Oswald, Glenn Troyer and Daniel Swartzendruber. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery.
